Her eyes still alert

He kissed her goodbye
She hated seeing him go
Each morning to work

As that other life
At his office worried her
Just who did he see?

Was he a good man
Sometimes he had to work late
Or was he lying?

Did he flirt with girls?
Perhaps taking them to lunch
With her home alone

She loathed not knowing
That worry ate inside her
For he gave no hint

So she went to town
Hoping to see him lunchtime
Going to the shops

He was so surprised
And they went to the café
Her eyes still alert

Watching girls pass by
Each one seemed so flirtatious
Was it her or not?

She lost him of course
She questioned every move
Trust had flown away

  1. This is such a poignant write, relationships are like sand held in our hands. If held loosely, the sand remains where it is but the minute we close our hands and squeeze tightly to hold on, the sand trickles through our fingers. Beautifully executed. Thank you so much for participating at Prompt Nights and for your constant love and support.

    Lots of love,
    Sanaa

  7. Sometimes too many questions are dangerous - perhaps that lingering distrust can't be the foundations of a lasting relationship though? At some point we need to be able to close our eyes and feel everything is ok

  9. Jealously is nasty infection... And when those feelings are accompanied by a suspicious mind that refuses to ask practical questions, well... your last stanza says it all.

  10. Perhaps the man ignited those suspicions from past behavior, and she was left bitter and broken. This is a powerful piece! <3

Suspicions often lead to other nasty endeavors. Trust is a casualty. Too much mistrust will certainly drive the man away. Very true, Robin!
