Clouds scudded overhead

I looked out of the window

I couldn't sleep this night

The clouds scudded overhead

The wind blowing them quietly

Moon chose to not look down on me

I looked at alarm clock

Too early to get up

Frustrated, I stretched myself

The ceiling fan hummed overhead

I heard the sea far away

I hat breaking my sleep

Preferring break of dawn

When the welcome bright gleam greets me

Sun rising over the treetops

A blackbird flew over the common

Flooding rain

It is always pleasure to explore the wild

Under high waterfalls roaring down

Caves and canyons with ancient rock art

Wild rivers overflowing their banks

As winters rains floods fields and forests

Carrying detritus everywhere far away

Whilst giving us essential water for reservoirs

And washing everything to the sea

How thorough is nature in its love

Layering its debris far, far away

Silt packed high as each bend in the river

Water cutting new paths in its journey

Except when granite show her stern face

Denying all entry to her domain

For she is old and wise and bears all

As she has patience and knows what will be

Like most boys

We put newspaper for helmets on heads
As the spring rain drizzled down from above
But we were boys running home after school
Still splashing in puddles or finding shade
Seizing the moment and quite unafraid

No way we'd say a prayer for it to stop
Or hope that we'd quickly get to back door
Seeing the spiralling water rush down
For most boys like us lived for this moment
Whatever weather it was heaven sent

We'd never forgive ourselves missing out
The world was our oyster every day
Like all boys we did things all our own way
Now glimmering sun shone high in the cloud
Got home bedraggled and shouting out loud

Waiting for the rain

We were waiting for the rain
Well Jimmy my husband was
Staring at the dry paddocks
But his face was full of pain

This happened every year
For sun we get a'plenty
Rain comes in winter we hope
Else there'll be many a tear

The dog knows there's something up
Hiding any place he can
Master's not a happy man
Waiting for his "Come on pup!"

While I watch what words I say
As Jim sits there whittling wood
Then gets up, quietly says
I must give the stock some hay

"Need a hand?" I said to him
He nodded grinning just a bit
We load the trailer, so I drive
He cuts the bales, face quite grim

There's a band of cloud out west
A slight chance that we'll have rain
We cut the bales, spread the feed
So stock rush up up for their feast

We've got enough to last a bit
As we complete today's task
And exhausted we take a rest
He looks worried, I admit

In bed that night cuddled up
Heard the first drops of rain fall
Then how it came pouring down
As I heard a bark from pup

I got up to let him in
Rain fell heavy on the roof
So then I went back to bed
Jim looked at me with a grin

Month April was cross

My girl's named April
And she likes tossing her hair
Eyes looking at me

And she spun around
Her feet planted on the ground
Beckoning to me

I took her warm hand
And waltzed her madly around
Hugging close to me

Month April was cross
So the clouds gathered above
Rained on her and me

But we both chuckled
With our two faces now wet
We're in love you see

Then kissed each other
For we plan to wed in June
Faces filled with glee

It rained last night

It rained last night, music on the roof
But then a dripping sound was the proof
There was a leak, I need buckets fast
Water splashing, this was not the last

Wife dreamt on, she was in fairy land
Buckets here, dishes there, lamp in hand
While I toiled found tarpaulin in the shed
To put on roof and get back to bed

Water swirled around every garden plot
I took the tarp up, what a crackpot
Tied it to gutter on either side
Then got back down and then went inside

I planned to call roofer in the morn
I stood there naked as day was born
Turned the tap planning to take a bath
When wife comes in, sees me, has a laugh

Asks who I was talking to outside
"Just the fish, who worried about high tide"
She sponges my back, washes my hair
Then steps in the bath without a care

Longing for you

I drove along the dusty track
Sun brilliant in its mocking way
Speckled sky showed no hint of rain
Not one thin hope to assuage the pain

Oh how I miss your lilting voice
Our days of quiet harmony
You said seeing my lust for you
'I'll not yield no matter what you do"

But you came back when the rains broke
"An extra hand to help" you said
Rain teemed down from the rippled sky
You held my hand, we blend you and I

I will win

I walk into a bar
Escape out of the rain
A drunk slumped on a stool
Oh that's just great, what a pain

Then the barman looked up
So I ordered a shot
Sat by the warm fireside
Then in walks girl...my she's hot!

Checks bar then the fire
Sits down right next to me
While the drunk laughs out loud
As she gets a Bellini

"Take no notice of him"
Says this queen of the night
"I can't wait to get home
Family's my hearts delight"

My animated face
Must have shown surprise
"Eagles lose, I will win"
Yes I saw it in her eyes

A long summer

It was a long summer
While sun smirked down on us
Like an errant uncle
Outstaying his welcome

We needed a shaman
To sing a song for us
We needed the dark clouds
To pour rain down on us

Oh sincere singer sing
Spirit the days to change
Muddy our paths for us
Flood the roads, we don't care

We've lost our dignity
We've forgotten our pride
We lose much more each day
The raven shakes his head

It was a long summer
Clouds darken the night skies
We listen to the rain
Watching from the window

Now just who do we praise?
We had cursed and ranted
Thunder booms, lightning strikes
Someone is not happy

What joy the feeling

I drew the curtains
Weather was miserable
A sombre grey day

Sad clouds rushed above
Obedient to the wind
Raspy thunder coughed

Then the lightning struck
The clouds wet themselves with fear
And I laughed out loud

So I went outside
Standing there unprotected
Kissed now by the rain

At first on my face
Then my hair and down my neck
Whay joy the feeling

Rainy Day

Cat sat by the door waiting
Holding everyone to ransom
It was a rainy day and both
He and the dog wanted to go outside

I opened the door slowly
The dog grinned then looked at me
And performed a pirouette
The cat just glowered at me in disgust

So the dog scampered off out
Ran over the lawn, cocked leg
Then ran in circles before
Prancing, leaping and looking back at me

Cat meanwhile scowled with disgust
Tip-toed his way to the shed
With dangerous look on face
To hide in the dense weed and out of sight

By magic the sun now came out
Clearly a change on the way
Meanwhile the dog was trampling
The long grass by the boundary fence

Joan called me from the kitchen
Morning coffee had been made
Smug cat now smiled on the step
With not one wet hair on his sleek body

I had a towel for the dog
Shook himself all over me
Cat jumped on the window sill
As my lovely wife laughed herself silly

Rainy days

I wait for the tram
Watching the threatening clouds
Raincoat in my case

Then swipe my ticket
Find a seat by the window
Stare at the grey sky

She got on stop nine
Tall, dark, hair was all frizzy
Classic high cheeked face

She looked at no-one
But she knew I looked at her
I read the paper

Then the sky darkened
As I read her beautiful eyes
And her turned up nose

We reached the city
The rain poured down in torrents
At Town Hall she rose

Then I caught her eyes
And gave her my newspaper
She took it grinning

Smiling in the rain
With that paper on head and
Unfinished crossword

From that day onward
We would both sit together
The crossword not done

Going back to work

The rain still poured down
We both shared your umbrella
I'd forgotten mine

I blame the weather
Much more than your pleading eyes
Going home with you

It was strength of mind
Seeing morning's cloudy dawn
That look on your face

Then you smile at me
And remember what we did
Both bathed in kisses

You now grasp my hand
Both sharing your umbrella
Going back to work

A spin in the Australian bush

Now don't get me wrong I love the rain
But when you're on a hike map in hand
Searching for the right path but in vain
And a dark cloud comes to pick you out
To funnel water on you like a water spout

You search for what shelter you can find
As more storm clouds surge overhead
Someone in power is most unkind
If I wanted water I'd be at the beach
As the wild wind now decides to push and screech

Thunder and lightning please stay away
As I search around for drier ground
The huge tree ahead is a Moreton Bay
It will shade me from storm's sweeping wake
Along with a Koala and a Corncrake

My dog looked at me

My dog now looked at me doubtfully
Hesitant about his morning walk
As thunder grumbled veiled threats outside

He wagged his tail as I donned my coat
Not his usual wag but obedient
No doubt preferring somewhere to hide

We headed for the park where he'd bark
And sniff at all the other dogs there
Which other owners could not abide

But t'was deserted as the darkened skies
Started to pour down with rain and hail
Now there was nowhere at all to hide

My dog kept on looking up at me
His eyes treating me with such scorn
Sulking head down now not by my side

That we were so soaked there is no doubt
When the weather eased we headed home
My wife there with towel and grin quite wide

My dog's tongue it was now hanging out
A smirk upon his face washed with rain
Shook himself before he went inside

A day in the life of the Sun

The night slips silently away
We wait for the new day to dawn
Sun grinning on the horzon
Scintillating for a few seconds
Before leaping into the sky
Carrying hope for each of us

Then hiding behind dark rain clouds
Spilling water down, down on us
Dawdling with nonchalant purpose
Across the now drenched countryside
As though late for date somewhere
Like a mooching boy with stick in hand

The warm golden orb appears again
Flying high in the sky warming us
Flagrantly opening flowers petals
Unfurling leaves cheering us up
Making its way till the days end
Winking goodnight to one and all

It's now a fine day

The rain has now ceased
Blue patches show their faces
Now smirking at me

Sun grins behind one
Like us peeking out of doors
And shines down on me

Smiles on our faces
Kids in the puddles do play
It's now a fine day

Australian Bush

We watched from our cave shelter
Where we had taken refuge
The heavy rain had now ceased
Easing to a thin drizzle
The old mountain ash trees sighed
Born hundreds of years ago
Their origins time forgot
Seemed to shake off the water
A few limbs had snapped off now
As sun radiates its warmth
And the forest birds called again
Their singing rings in our ears
To lift our spirits once more
Soaked to the skin, homeward bound
What stories we would now tell
Trapped in the Australian bush

Gentle falling rain

Blue sky this morning
But soon though clouds filled the sky
First white then turned grey

Sad they seemed to be
Soon they wept tears from the sky
Gentle falling rain

As I stayed indoors
Happy trees waved in the sky
My plants also grinned

As clouds blew away
Birds now swept down from the sky
For a welcome drink

My bus was late

My bus was gone so I sought shelter
With the rain pouring helter skelter
I huddled in the closest doorway
A sex shop, great way to end the day!
More to the point it was open still
A dog sneered at me with looks to kill

Two girls wilth umbrella passed me by
One sang out "Go on in don't be shy"
"Have you got your eyes on us pair?"
"Get us a dildo while you're there"
A taxi drives past, the brakes are hit
As I wave it down to get in it

Girl's jealous stare and now do entreat
So we all packed into the back seat
"Sorry" says one, "We also missed the bus"
"Thank you for taking pity on us"
"We have been hit on a hundred times"
I feel the heat of her thigh sublime

I very nearly passed this one over trying to think what to write with the prompt words. Luckily my muse appeared at the right (write) time...she is a good girl!
