Our grapes of wrath

The clouds cast no shadows rain descended
Water turning gutter into little streams
I dreamt of being a boy once again
Brown as a berry fearless of naught
Paddling in the river my shoes on the bank
Or flying my kite at top of the hill
Staying in bed when clearly was not ill

Those halcyon times are now long ended
Summers heat is but a nuisance these days
My passport runs out of date this years end
Who cares when most of world has shut its doors
Covid clusters continue to appear
Who can tell what rest of the year will bring
'Tis grapes of wrath, some will cry, some will sing

A strange land

It is the fourth month we've been in lockdown
Slowly the rules for breath and distance are eased
I sit in cafe by myself alone
A friend joins me as manager condones
Before I would be standing on a cross
Queuing up to get my drink in carton
Only to sit outside with coffee in hand
While thinking to myself what a strange land

For it's worked the virus is in control
But the state's border I still cannot cross
Unless I quarantine for fourteen days
That's OK seeing Covid's nasty ways
They have started playing sport again too
Few fans permitted so stadium looks bare
But my team won last night so I am pleased
It's good to see regulations now eased

So what's the bad you probably ask me
It seems that for weeks so little I've done
Not been to movies, family barely seen
I've got older but nowhere have I been
I've eaten a lot and put on some weight
Feel so much nearer that pearly gate
Winter's now here (though it's Summer for you)
Let's all be careful in future, Toodle-oo!

Trusting people

War and turmoil have always inspired art
But who wants to see bodies on a cart
Or see surgeon cutting soldier's body
To show war's futility in trench or wadi
And so we must now see and hear the news
Of deaths from Corona around the Earth

But artists know people do like this stuff
As if film and news don't give us enough
Some countries are relaxing all the rules
It is not over they must think we're fools
Just wish experts would speak about the drill
As politicians jabber has no worth

So my eyes are like that hawk high in sky
And being prepared lest danger is nigh
Hope I can soon drink a cappuccino
Or a meal in restaurant with some vino
To chat and smile there with lots of others
And trusting people just like my brothers

Beautiful World

Here winter's knocking on the door
That's because we are upsidedown
Living down in Australia
Not that winter does us much harm
Apples, blueberries not dear

The heat has now gone from our days
But sun still lingers to please us
Reading books so times not wasted
As the years pinwheel spins around
Chocolate's at hand so I hear

While toasted muffins are a treat
We think a lot about the world
What have we done to cause such harm?
We've asked a lot the reason why
Death peers at us without a fear

Beautiful world it makes us cry
We always thought we knew it all
But question our own lives today?
That thought never comes to mind for
We've been checked by a scrutineer!

I can't cut my hair

First it was tourists in China
Then cruise ship with people on board
Now the whole world is upsidedown
Everyone wearing a scared frown

Corona virus now with us
It cares not just who it will kiss
Australia's response was swift
As the virus with stealth did drift

Face masks were worn but scorned by some
Gatherings were banned all over
Keeping safe distance was the rule
Mums worried sending kids to school

We were again fighting a war
Covid 19 was the enemy
Some of us fight but some don't care
Barbers closed; I can't cut my hair!
