I wonder if she thinks of me

If history had its eyes on me I sadly disappointed it

I did it my way, I didn't join the pack

Apart from playing sport like tennis, cricket and soccer

And running around keeping fit it dawned on me

That there were many girls around

That needed escorting home from school

And should be escorted to the movies

On Friday night with a box of chocolates

Most would be quite pleased rewarding me

With a goodnight kiss as I walked her home

To her place wher her mother smiled

But then her dad looked at me darkly

Hoping that I had behaved myself

Later I was allowed to sit down with them

Being happier I could be observed there

And allowed a goodnight kiss when I left

Later we both got working jobs

We worked miles apart

And so we parted

So many years later

I still think of her

I wonder if she thinks of me?

My girlfriend Grace

First I hated the way she flicked her braids
Until the time I found she smiled at me
Her simple look made my heart skip a beat
And what joy to steal that first kiss with her
We walked home from school she did not demur

What bliss when summer holidays came up
Suggested swimming at lido in town
Met her at gate with young brother in tow
She shrugged her shoulders "Mum said I had to
or else I wasn't permitted to go"

She had loosened her hair from the school braids
Now I thought she looked prettier by far
We were soon swimming in middle of pool
Held hands in water so bro could not see
Not that he looked at us I do agree

Clock now showed half past four, so out we got
Went to changing rooms to change our wet togs
Met up again and strolled into town
So gave him some candy while waiting for bus
So Grace's bro didn't stare back at us

You lie to me

"You lie to me" she said, we lay in bed
I replied "Don't need to, I tell the truth"
"You're beautiful, I love your hair and eyes;
Your soft skin, what is the need for lies?"

At any other time she then would laugh
But now it was serious and not a game
She wept, "I know about the other one"
I saw you in town with your honey bun"

"Oh that was just an office girl my love
Think she works in finance or somewhere else
She got in the lift t'was small talk that's all
I went to the bank, she went up the mall"

I had lied to her, for that was quite true
Not with office girl but you know who
All this was years ago, I don't know why
She then shook her head and began to cry

April

I was neither fool nor poet
She the prettiest girl I'd seen
April the month when I met her
I liked the way she flicked her hair
I walked right up and so did dare
To ask her for a date with me
To my surprise she did agree

Not only that, knew who I was
It was set up by the mothers
Who had both chatted unbeknown
Thinking we would both get on fine
For a week or two our eyes did shine
Then I twigged that all was not well
As though I heard a warning bell

She'd had boyfriend that tried it on
Trusting she fallen in the trap
Luckily she'd escaped from him
Pity they didn't tell me first
Some secrets really are the worst
April is for fools and poets
No need to tell me, I know it!

Don't put your daughter on the stage

"Don't put your daugter on the stage
Mrs Worthington" so the song goes
She was warned but look what happened
As the girl had certainly ripened

It was not me to be the one
To give her such good advice
She was given an explanation
For the sweet lass had an acting passion

Acting in a play, why not I say?
What harm can come of this venture?
Her parents pleaded and tears she cried
But nevertheless she persisted

Actors, producers found her quite bright
And taught her a lot both day and night
So it was she became a star
Acted in theatres both near and far

T'was sad to see her move far away
I knew her when we were both at school
She always looked over my shoulder
For someone much richer and older

That girl

I really loved that girl
Was that the truth? Her eyes agreed

That girl I really loved
Her eyes agreed that was the truth

I loved that girl? Really?
The eyes agreed; was that her truth?

The truth was I really loved that girl
That; her eyes agreed

That agreed, I loved her eyes
That girl really was the truth

That girl, her eyes I really loved
Agreed that was the truth

Sweet Colleen

Did I tell you about sweet Colleen
My brother's girlfriend when I was a teen
Don't know why but I thought she was beaut
She was shy, smiled at me which was cute
Aching for her, she was ripe fruit

I so wanted a girl just like that
She wasn't thin nor was she fat
You could say I had a crush on her
Had bully brother so did demure
Which was more than I could endure

Luckily he and she did not last
Soon she was a thing of the past
I started to work in another place
Near Christmas I thought I saw her face
When she saw me; said "HI" no disgrace

Found out we were made for each other
She then said "You're not like your brother"
Now in the twilight of my long life
After all the good times and the strife
So glad I did steal her for my wife

Coleen saw the subtle difference
Chose me on other side of fence
I'd fogotten what grief he could cause
That she left him was cause for applause
She was like a gift from Santa Claus

Girlfriend

My first real girlfriend was Joan
I'd met her playing tennis
Free time used the courts at school
Soon after walked her back home
Held hands, talked of many things

She was in a different class
Both at school and on the court
She won the girls tournament
And easily beat me too
Holding her hand my heart sings

Her mum, dad holidayed once
Down at beach resort in Kent
Was invited down for a few days
So she and me walked a lot
Hoped this was more than a fling

She told me after that spree
That was all for her and me
It broke my heart to be free
We'd both left school gone to work
To see what the future brings

Later I found perfect wife
Settled down to married life
Had our kids one, two and three
Worked hard finally retired
Travelled the world sightseeing

Wrote stories and poetry
Kids married all left home
On Facebook had a few friends
Wife died, I'm alone again
Then old girlfriend requesting

Her husband too has now died
So we talked of such a lot
As though we had not parted
Few weeks ago she too had died
Wonder where the story's ending

It was her birthday

It was her birthday and he had been busy all week and still hadn't bought a gift for her and they were meeting after work so it was lunchtime or never. So Joe trawled through the arcades and speciality shops but couldn't make up his mind between, jewelry, perfume or a watch or anything really that would a smile on her face and that special look in her eyes.

"May I be of assistance?" The elegant shop assistant said as Joe wandered around another boutique shop. Joe plunged right in desperately saying "It's my girlfriend's birthday and I just can't make up my mind" he said shyly. "Let me walk you around and show you a few things" she said reassuringly as she proceeded to present him with possibilities after tactfully extracting his budget for the purchase.

Finally after indicating that there was plently to choose from she then said "I do have this opal ring that I'd love to have my boyfriend give me." Joe looked at the ring then at the girl, nodded  and pulled his wallet from his pocket..

It was her birthday
Joe looked at the opal ring
And said "I'll take it"

Of course a there's a backstory to this poem because back in 1969 when my wife Maureen gave birth to our third child and we decided to name her Robyn; I bought her an opal ring similar to this which Robyn has to this day.

Emotive boyfriend

Crunch on the driveway
As I open the five bar gate
Call on the girlfriend
Before it's too late

She knows I'm coming
Her dad's an irascible man
Instills fear in me
For that is her plan

It's a sin I know
But her kisses are so sweet
The thrill of the chase
Rare times can we meet

We play for an hour
Her breath smells of mint
Has voice that trills like a bird
Now off I must sprint

I flee just in time
To hide in the trees
As I see the dust from his ute
I pray on my knees

Shiver my timbers
That's taken its toll
Although she has been all worth it
She is such a doll

Leticia was late

Leticia was late
For her latte at the cafe
but that was her style

She had the idea
that she stood out in the crowd
she was right of course

For she was stunning
shining like the brightest star
on a moonlit night

I liked her accent
her makeup the way she dressed
the look in her eyes

We were sycophants
slaves to her every wish
such fools that we were

She played us along
wonder what her real name was
no one ever knew

My education
in ways and wiles of women
all came from this girl

Just to make sure

Jake had gone out with Patsy since High School and he thought she was the real thing and they would be together forever.

Her family welcomed him every night as he came round and she was sporty and fun to be with and he imagined the future with them always together.

He loved going on long walks together both in the nearby forest and at the local swimming hole and he could imagine no other life than being with her.

So it was a complete surprise that one night after watching the telly at her place that she suggested that they should have a break...play the field a little just to make sure.

Reluctantly he agreed despite being heartbroken but thought that he must comply to show that he was not too clingy.

A few months later his mother showed him in the local paper that Patsy had become engaged to a local bloke that lived quite close to him and Jake felt he could have fallen through the floor.

I met Helen

It was a mistake
To take her to the ball game
She loved the pitcher

I couldn't match up
To that athletic hero
On the other team

So I drowned my thoughts
In the city library
I was lost in words

Drinking in the calm
The soothing quiet of books
I there met Helen

She too had a face
For to launch a thousand ships
And such pretty hands

She nodded at me
When I suggested coffee
And we got on fine

I was not surprised
She told me she loved horses
I'll fight to keep her

There are of course some allusions to the Greek story of Helen of Troy in this piece

Okay on the whole

I was so annoyed
Temporary replacement
Fixed with this date

So I sighed out loud
We would now have a foursome
On this Friday night

We were introduced
Dark, wary and aloof
Tiniest of smiles

She drank G and T
Conversation was a bit hard
She had pretty hands

We talked about work
Said she could play the guitar
I became less tense

I touched her fingers
When I told her what I did
She started to smile

Shall we do something
Just by ourselves? I said
As we were dancing

She nodded grinning
And was so pleased that I asked
This girl's a keeper

I saw Jim later
Of course he asked how it went
"Okay on the whole"

No gain without pain

Current real girlfriend
Stated that it was over
Such devastation

The break up painful
The  loneliness absurd
'Til the siren's call

There at the bus stop
Those green eyes smouldering
Her hair enticing

How she was surprised
When I just walked up to her
And told her my name

We talked in the street
A flicker of interest
Then we made a date

Full six month's later
She told me of her boyfriend
That now would give up

She keen as I was
Accepting my proposal
Chose a June wedding

Tumbling down

How gorgeous she was
I so easily fell in love
With those sparkling eyes

Her hand like flowers
Opening so prettily
As I held her close

She and I belonged
Just like a cup and saucer
'Til the other man

Too sporty for me
And that flash sports car of his
Even I liked it

So it was over
Everything came tumbling down
Like a house of cards

My girlfriend

My friend she’s feisty
Pint sized and a real cutie
Flirts with anyone

Where is her right side?
I’ve not been stabbed in the back
I’m a lucky one

My meddlesome miss
May not be worth the trouble
But I still love her

My Fuzzy memory

When you are a youngster you dream of growing up, having a bike, running away from home or eating ice cream or cake until you are sick. Most of us will remember collecting the last free card in a set or a plastic toy you really wanted in the cereal packet. In my day we collected cigarette cards.
However as time goes on your dreaming alters to more worldly needs. Such as getting the girl in pigtails sitting in front of you in class to turn round and smile at you or scream because you pulled her hair. Unfortunately this sort of dream often comes at inappropriate moments and the first thing you know is the teacher glaring at you if you are looking at the girl in pigtails.

When I was a child I was a bit of a wimp as I had a bully for a brother. I don’t know what he had been told about my impending arrival but as I was a clingy, hungry, smelly baby that took all of his mother’s attention, I was clearly not welcome. I wasn’t supposed to be a brother, the name chosen some time before my birth was Judith so clearly I was a disappointment all around. Luckily I was born in the morning at home and there was a bird singing outside in the garden, a Robin, so an alternative name sprung my mother’s mind. I am quite pleased about this as they could have been particularly cruel and called me Judith regardless.

So I grew up as a brother, and soon had few boy cousins and sundry other male relatives too but only one girl cousin She was the oldest relative of my generation and completely opposite to me in every way. She was clean, polite, clever, musical, and was an only child. So my dream then was to be a girl. So I liked dolls but didn’t have one of my own. I did have a stuffed toy monkey named Beppo who was my constant loving companion as opposed to my brother who was an inconstant hateful one. I didn’t hate him it is just that as I followed him around he saw me as the enemy that would take all his food, toys, love and attention, which had been his right until I came on the scene, so eventually I tried to keep out his way. His recourse at the meal table was to eat very quickly and then steal the food from my plate when no-one else was looking. This is why I am so thin.

As I wanted a dolly, and I moaned a lot at what I saw was deprivation the message finally sunk in. As there was a little girl that lived at the top of the street my mother was game enough to talk to her mother to ask if she could make my dreams come true and I give me one of the little girl’s cast off dollies that she didn’t need. My guess is that she probably did have a few but when she heard that this dirty, thin, ugly little boy from down the road wanted a dolly suddenly all of her dollies were very precious to her. So I never received one.

So I had to grow up as a boy with just a toy monkey and a few dinky toy cars to play with. The monkey I may add was my constant loving companion for many years and of necessity had a number of replacement faces sewn on when the other ones had worn away with love. Eventually I stopped dreaming of dollies and settled for dreaming about the next best thing…girls.

The problem with girls is that they don’t dream about you. I discovered the opposite sex in class at school. Then as a boy in the between age of being a lovely little chap and an obnoxious teenager I found myself as a new pupil in a new school. At the music lesson everyone had to stand up at the back of a large room all huddled together. As luck would have it a girl of my own age and size stood by my side as I was at the end of the row of boys and she was at the end of the row of girls and the two had to meet somewhere and that was us. So we sang along together. I would say we sang in unison but that would not have been the case with me as I had a voice like a cross cut saw as one music master later said of me. However she did reach out and hold my hand which had never happened to me before. It was something like having ice cream for the first time. I am glad she didn’t look to see how dirty it was.

In those days children were quite independent of parents. We walked to school by ourselves and walked back home afterwards either alone or with friends. That is not true. Girls walked or skipped, boys ran or dawdled, pushed each other in the bushes or tripped each other up. This is just a male thing. So that afternoon when the last bell rang the little girl waited in the playground for me to walk her home. It wasn’t far, so we walked down road turned right into her road and took her to the door where her mother met us and ushered us inside. She gave us a drink and when I had finished that I was ushered to the door and that is the last I time I ever spoke to the little girl. She may have noticed how dirty my hands were.

Another reason may be that I was an unaccomplished liar. When I first attended this school as a new boy I had no standing, no history so I told them that we had just come from Africa where I grew up with the natives. Now you will say this was untrue. Not entirely, for years I had lived in a dream world of looking after a pet monkey and through ill luck had a spear thrown at me by my best friend that went in my calf. So I had an entirely different history in my mind which others saw this as me being a lying little oaf.

My life has been littered with such experiences. Not all of them involving little dark haired girls that wanted to hold my hand; probably like the Good Samaritan that would help even the lowest of the low. And the girl? Sadly I don’t even remember her name as my mind is a little fuzzy these days.

It's Over

She rested in my arms her face so close to mine that her sweet breath transferred to me. The scent of her body enveloped me and my mental camera captured this scene. This moment should last for ever I mused but I knew that she was not sleeping she had something to say, but didn’t know how to say it. When we had met there was something missing, her eyes did not speak to me. So she lay there thinking and perhaps savouring this last moment of our lives together too.  Our affair had lasted some time, it was good because we laughed a lot and had a passion that was almost brutal in our eagerness to possess the other.  Foolishly we made impossible plans of a life together; impossible because of the difficulties involved, impossible because of the hurt that we would cause to so many others. How long had we played this game, this dream that was built on sand that shifted a little everyday as the winds of truth swirled all around us?  I stroked her arm and as if this was the sign, the signal that she needed she looked into my face sadly and groped for the words that I had known would come one day. “I am leaving you.”  Or perhaps, “This is not going to work”; no it would be “We cannot continue like this.” It is funny that all these years later I don’t remember the words. Why should I? I didn’t want to hear them. Already the realisation had put me in shock; she no longer belonged to me. It really was over.
