I've feet of clay

I've feet of clay and the bridge is too far
I'm stony broke, failed in life, crashed my car
It was an old model, hate myself now
Must buy a new one except I can't see how

There's something about me that needs a lift
Been kind of stupid for years...now I drift
I'll make a new start and kill my malaise
Hold my hand dear; see the star-shine ablaze

Forget yesterday

What sort of weapon is revenge?
Quite useless when a love is lost
It doesn't alter their act of choice
It only speaks with a cruel voice

How love sings but hate snarls with rage
That charges head first into a fight
Chooses not between sense and hate
Like wild beasts fighting for a mate

Sing only a sad song of love lost
That will ease the mood you now feel
Hit on that girl in the cafe
See, she smiles; forget yesterday

Nowhere to hide

The slap of waves on the boat's side
As now the wind blew as night fell
Fourth day at sea with nowhere to hide

Except when the sea was unkind
And sprayed us all with its wet kiss
O land, land just where are you to find?

Last night another baby dies
But the mother still holds him tight
When she gives him up, all day she cries

Our water is running so short
But one sip in morning and night
Just how long before we reach a port?

How bad was life before this?
That makes us suffer hell at sea
The first sandy shoreline I will kiss

It's dark but lights are seen far off
So we head that way full of hope
But my mother now has a bad cough

We arrive at a cove near a port
And soon are discovered there
But too late our landing to abort

So we are herded in buses
Just how comfy the seats they feel
We're so quiet nobody cusses

I smile at my little brother
His eyes all agog at this place
And mother with us all together

I'm a fool

I'm a fool with such heartache
I have had it since she chucked me
Left now with a cargo of grief
As she chose him, don't you see?

It's not easy to forget her
But Spring blossoms they come what may
While the rain clouds still cry for me
To comfort one more gloomy day

Softening the earth around me
Giving a sweet smell of flowers
Already spurting from the ground
A promise for my lonely hours

The bright sun shines all about me
Just to complete the magic act
The office blonde just winked at me
No, I'm not kidding, it's a fact

Sip the honey

Life is short, life is long
When it's good sing a song
But when it's bad you need strength

Try to be busy please
Just like those little bees
Sip the honey don't be sad

Good times come, then they go
First it shines then it snows
Love will always conquer all

So touch just one sad heart
Pierced now with your love's dart
So they see a future bright

Then comes an endless sleep
Sadness as others weep
But a smile on just one face

He sat where they sat

He prayed
Where they sat
He yearned
For days passed
He wept
At her coffin
He couldn't let go
Why should he?

The Cleaning Lady

Bert Daly sat on his bed in the retirement home. Everyone said how sensible it was to take that step so that he wouldn’t have to worry about home maintenance, manage the large garden and to be sure to have support close to hand.

Bert thought differently, he had been reluctant almost combative about the move which to him represented yet another nail in the coffin as he said to his daughter Penny. She had merely shaken her head when she visited him on the day he moved in and stared out of the window looking at the garden and the one or two oldies that moved sluggishly down the pathways with their walkers.

She had thought of letting her Dad stay with her but when she mentioned it to Jim her husband his faced turned an ashen grey and she too remembered how argumentative and interfering her dad was in everything they did. No, he would be happier here…she hoped.

Now Bert on his own moved listlessly from bedroom to bathroom to living room and kitchen, “Thirteen seconds” he muttered “and the grand tour is completed.” He sat in his favorite chair and picked up the newspaper for the umpteenth time that day and complained, “There must be something else I haven’t read.”

Just as he was thinking of screwing the paper up and throwing in the bin the doorbell rang followed by a polite knock on the door. Bert got up and shuffled to the door and opened it. There in front of him was a smiling Indian girl who said “Hello Mister Daly, I am your cleaning lady. We will come to your place each fortnight to do the cleaning. We will come every other Thursday.”

Bert just stared at her so she lowered her eyes. She then said “My name is Deepal. You do not have to go out when we come.” She paused then said with a little smile “We will clean around you.”

Bert was still looking at her, he thought that she was beautiful and her eyes were so kind and discreet. He opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out so he just nodded.

“I will see you on Thursday this week” she added.

“Thank you Deepal. I will see you then.”

Deepal turned and left. Bert slowly closed the door. It may not be so bad living here after all he thought, there is light on the horizon.

Deepal - Hindi girl's name meaning light

This season of goodwill

                         Associated Press Photo

Peace talks abandoned

Border crisis deepening

Civilian lives lost

Neighbor countries swamped

Trouncing of rebel forces goes on

Refugee’s plight dire

Bodies left in street

Thousands depend on our aid

But issue ignored

What words can we say

This season of thanksgiving

Can love conquer all?

Where is our insight

Can’t we find the road to peace?

Else we lose all hope

Wartime

I shuddered at such putrid prompt words for Three Word Wednesday to write in my blog when I crave for ones of love and kindness and hope. However let’s see what happens:

It was a rainy day, a muddy cold day and he was in a strange place, a foreign land, and his one wish, his craving was that he would get back safely to his family at home. It was wartime and the fighting had continued for long years and now his truck had broken down and he was on his own. They might find him if he stayed by the truck, but it might be the wrong they! As he pondered, exposed and scared he thought that sitting in a target was not a good idea. So he wandered over to a ruined building a short walk away to seek shelter.

He could keep an eye on the road from there and maybe get a little rest. There amid the tangle of debris and the creepers that made the most of the opportunity he pushed his way inside. He heard the faint sound of breathing and saw to his amazement two children squeezed up in the corner watching him. They shuddered with fear so he stood stock still, took out his water bottle and a reached out his arm offering it to them. They said not a word they were so frightened. So he loosened the cap and put it within their reach and stepped away a little and sat down on what was left of the floor. He leaned back and half closed his eyes in an attempt to relax.

After a few seconds the elder child leaned forward and stealthily reached out for the bottle, shook it and offered it to her young companion. In turn they gulped down the water and pushed the container back toward him. Their faces wore no smiles but their eyes said it all as they were the real victims of war; not the trained soldiers from both sides fighting on foreign soil but those children who would now be scarred for life.

He observed the building again and felt the first drops of rain fall in their shelter without shelter. So he got up and started to look for some protection. The children grew frightened and shook their heads as he lifted some of the debris away. His senses were knocked back by a stench so putrid that he had to cover his face and his eyes smarted. Clearly he had found the bodies of the children’s parents.

The elder child a girl looked at him fiercely and the younger one just cried. He tried to get them to go with him to another hideout away from the horror. They would not do this as this was their home and he was the enemy.

Today April 25th is Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand. It is a public holiday and is the most revered day in Australia’s calendar.  We remember the fallen from all sides in war.
