Winter taunts us

Winter taunts us with Autumn's colour
Romantic as we hold each other
As dead leaves fall softly to land

Then eerie mists appear at dawn
Soon blown away by the cruel north wind
And beaches now seen with empty strand

Draft excluder now placed foot of door
Trees stripped quite clean with nothing to say
Gaping at view of barren farmland

Humans appearance changes now too
They're less relaxed as if much to do
Planning Christmas needs every hand

Even the dog curls up in a ball
On summer days he lays out in a sprawl
Now dreams and moans of seashore's sand

Children's eyes shine with first fall of snow
Soon they're downcast with bitter cold
Slipping and sliding is not so grand

Now look! Spring flowers burst from the soil
Gloves not worn now, Sun shines at dawn
Birds chatter and sing like a brass band

Smiles are on faces walking around
Winter forgotten for one more year
Now couples dancing a saraband

My wife was always sad

My wife was always sad
The day Summer solstice came
For her it spelled it out
That another year would end too soon

Summer meant so much to her
Memories from so far back
Her life changed as the day grew short
For another year would end too soon

She loved the beach and sea
On the sand with kids and dogs
But when the days cooled right down
Sign another year would end too soon

Worst of all winter came
Rained poured down and frosts did bite
Then came snow that blocked all the roads
Yet another year would end too soon

Snow did melt and trees grew leaves
Spring brought back smile on her face
She started planning holidays
For another year had come around

The Painter

The days of picnics are gone
Cold wintertime has returned
Swallows and finches now flown
Nails are hammered into coffins

Brittle ice, morning's greeting
As the wind sings a sad song
A good time for ancestors
To meet their relatives now gone

Next door scrawny kid cries out
Frozen hands can't open door
After running errand for Ma
While I watch from my studio

It is sketched on the canvas
That scene from my window
My cat looks out hopefully
Daubs of colour on cruel white

Paintings stacked against my walls
Much like an author's keen words
Gathering dust still unread
They call me the unbalanced one

My favorite month

Ah! April's fresh and breezy smile
So leave my umbrella behind
I'd rather be kissed by spring's rain

The sun peeps in and out of sight
Clouds chase across the morning sky
Like a horse with a flowing mane

Anxious people they now look up
As raindrops fall they scurry on
And water washes down the drain

I smile as eagle soars above
Blown blossom now catches my eye
Train's gleeful whistle on the plain

Farmers busy ploughing their fields
Fat cattle mooing in the byre
Horse in paddock flicks his mane

April is my favorite month
It tells me that I am alive
And now I'm rid of winter's pain

Shedding tears

I'm sad now you've gone
For April is a lonely month
Shedding tears for me

I miss your dark eyes
For they glance at me no more
Who now do they see?

Your soft hands don't touch
Just who now have they beguiled
Why did you run free?

Doves they coo no more
Falling blossoms everywhere
But I have ennui

I'm sad now you've gone
For April is a lonely month
Shedding tears for me

A vision splendid, sometimes

What vision this that stirs a man
Who treading first upon a land
Will settle there and rest his bones
And a country is born

Then a young lass espies a man
She'll surely catch him if she can
So long as he makes the first approach
And a new love is born

Charcoal scrawls and daubs of paint
Model poses unlike a saint
His eyes flash with such artistic skill
A master work is born

The gardener paces up and down
His brow wrinkles with a frown
He's busy planting for all he's worth
A new landscape is born

A politician scans the map
Then rants and raves then takes a nap
Now he's upset nations near and far
A new conflict is born

A sport to play

Love is a game a sport to play
Involving two people or more
There may be tries and fouls galore
When yellow cards are given out

When people hit on each other
Always think they have scored so high
Some players lose their momentum
Their survival instincts are then lost

Like a game on a Scrabble board
Or just spinning the Roulette wheel
Playing around could cost a lot
Which is no answer to win love

Cold hearted season

Autumn shed her sad leafy tears
As Winter coming pushed past her
And watched her slowly die

He was a cruel cold hearted season
More exceptional by his breath
Which blew hope far away

How we suffered his long torment
Longing for the first glimpse of Spring
To come back home again

Then the crocus broke through the snow
It was the first joyful sign seen
Hinting of warmer days

Dark storm clouds now filled April's skies
Loudly laughing pouring with rain
As the chill lost its hold

She now having had all her fun
Gave way to Summer's languid ease
Sharp shadows now outlined

With sleepy breeze we now enjoyed
The balmy ease of the warm sun
Ere hard times came again

Summer's rich crop

As autumn winds blow the leaves away
And winter's chill will come what may
Will spring's blossom gladden our hearts
With summer's rich crop filling carts?

Oh how the loss of my sweetheart sears
As season's darkness now hides my tears
Brightened now with swallows song so dear
Will that cute maid be my panacea?

Her rosy red cheeks smile back at mine
She will keep me warm in wintertime
What stunning bloom how she does shine
We'll have our first child at harvest time

Each line of each verse implies successive seasons as the narrator records and forecasts events. N.B. The word 'fatidic' is not found in my English and Australian dictionaries so I have so have inferred its meaning at 'prophetic'.

Autumn winds

Changes are happening
Sun now starts sinking
Autumn winds now whisper in my life
Then winter cuts with its sharp knife
Chilling me to the bone
Now that I'm all alone

Sweet was the springtime
Summer a heady wine
How glorious were those days of ours
As we whiled away those happy hours
The sun knows does she not?
That you'll never be forgot

Playful Whispers

The time had now come
I heard the playful whispers
Seasons were changing again
Leaves fell sadly to the ground
Autumn winds whistled a warning
First they teased then tormented
Preparing us for winter's might
Her long lonely frigid nights
The raven surely knew
He strutted cockily in the stubble

The sun was ashamed
For she barely showed her face
There was no warmth in her pale smile
Left to fend for ourselves
Our work was harder still
So much to do so short of time
Stubborn tools and reluctant earth
Cleaved to our bidding
As winter grasped us in her fist
Then sprinkled us with cold snow

Just when all hope was lost
I was greeted by a visitor
One bright morning 'twas a Robin
On my doorstep so cocky
Tilting his head, full of news
He tweeted that spring was here
I tossed some crumbs down for him
Soon he was joined by others
Heralding this joyful day
Rejoicing in nature's constancy

Note: This is an example of Pathetic poetry which uses human feelings and attributes for the natural world.

Darkening my mind

Our nest of romance
This abode of happiness
My impulsive touch

The warmth of our love
Your passionate eyes
Hearts full of desire

Cup running over
The laughter of our children
Such contented ease

Leaves fall in autumn
A cruel sprinkling of sad tears
Darkening my mind

Cold winter of loss
My mind full of sad longing
This house of sorrow

Surprising seasons

                                    Morning wheat (Freepik)

Surprise at the dawn

Our blessings are so many

Joy with each sunrise

Spring is a delight

As nature gives birth again

With birds on the wing

The warmth of summer

The richness of its harvest

And being with you

Autumn is sadness

So many friends fly away

First frosts make us numb

But joy to behold

When Christmas blesses winter

I have you to hold
