Groovy Music

Trad Jazz was favorite when I was a youth
Groovy music with cute girls that sang
Stomped my feet with a beer glass in hand
Ottilie Paterson in Chris Barber's band

At first the venue was on top floor of pub
Crowded right out to enhance the feel
So popular was this Friday gig
They had to move to hall that was really big

I didn't drive at that time, that came later
Me and mate got lift in old Ford van
Dropped us both off after a nine mile trip
Getting home to have a long drunken kip

I survived the booze and the drunken ride
I bought Barber's records now long gone
Grown up and have normal life style
But still dream of my wild youth once in a while

That August night

Oh I remember that August night
Jazz club was raging
Us two dancing
With me touching
And holding you close so very tight

Your eyes and your hands never left mine
We swung to the beat
Despite the heat
Still on our feet
The sweet smile on your face was sublime

Walked home after our very first date
Moon lighting the way
Watched your hips sway
Was a great day
Knew from the first you'd be my best mate

I wake now from my afternoon nap
And cry myself hoarse
Dreaming of course
Years from the source
You've died and left me in life's sad trap

How well I recall that summer night
Jazz club was swinging
We were singing
Then were kissing
Holding each other so very tight

Note. The last verse shows that his memory is not quite the same as it was in first verse. Such is the penalty of getting old and forgetful, so he could be very much like me! I did invite my wife when we first met to the Jazz club I attended; as she sang in a light opera group she looked horrified and said "No thanks", but I did see her perform in Iolanthe and other classical performances!

At the Jazz Club

Friday night at the Jazz Club
Beat resounding foot stomping, cheering
You're sitting on a bar stool drinking

I see your cute face eyes half smiling
Challenging me to sing my love song
Leaning on the upright piano

The rhythms of my heart betray me
Pounding like a wild kettle drum
To some long past ragtime melody

Root problem was I didn't sing that well
After the song she says "That's unusual"
She then whispers "Back to my place then?"

At the trad jazz club

A drink in my hand
A crowded floor that Friday night
The band was loud and so were we
Free from work to do as we pleased
People jostled laughing out loud
Across the room I saw her there
Short dark hair and her eyes so bright
At the trad jazz club

The band was so loud
The dancers twirled their way around
As I now glanced around the room
She cocked her head looking at me
I made my way across to her
She lowered her eyes a small grin
Her friend nudged her without a sound
At the trad jazz club

She got to her feet
She was tiny about five foot none
On the packed floor her hands were warm
We twisted and turned to the beat
Up until they played “Petite Fleur”
Then she placed her head on my chest
Holding her close we were as one
At the trad jazz club

As if in a dream
I didn’t want to let her go
This little flower that bloomed for me
Took her back to her seat and friend
But never saw her there again
So many years have passed me by
I think of how I loved her so
At the trad jazz club
