There is a chicken missing

The cat sat on the cottage window ledge

Watching the fox stalk across fruit and veg

The fox had already seen her sat there

Untrusting, unafraid he didn't care

Obvious why the the fox had called this day

Was that chicken run was filled yesterday

New pullets were bought for fresh eggs to lay

Stealthy fox thinking this could make his day

The cat's old mistress was quite unaware

Was either that or she just didn't care

Cat wondered if she could foil that wily fox

Or why not put him in a cardboard box

The cat miaowed as mistress made cup of tea

Who came in to hear some hypocracy

The usual lies from her brat of a cat

Who'd hoax and lie as most cats are like that

Mistress merely thought she'd like some lunch

Rather than to give awful fox a punch

By time she looked at chooks in the hens run

She'd sadly missed fox run away with one

No help at all

At least the roses bloomed

As I tried to overcome

The sadness in losing her

And the Moon was no help

Grinning like a loon in the sky

So I reflected on the past

The present was no help at all

And did their kind words help?

Time will heal your words they said

As if I wanted that at all

With a sad wrinkled face

With the loss of Joy from my life

This causing me to tense right up

Flexing my muscles with such despair

The market square

Charlie's colt still pulled pulled his colorful cart covered with crockery and other collectibles to the market square. There was a cacphony of noise as he came closer to the site. He drew up in his allocated spot; caressed the ears of the colt, fastened its reins to a column then unloaded the goods."Quick as you can" he said to himself wiping the coal dust from some of the items as that was another part time job he had trying to make ends meet. Already prepared he started calling customers to the stall telling them what bargains they could find. Everybody was different; some coveted jewellry others cotton goods. He always had something that customers would covet. The day went well; Charlie didn't have a watch but he looked up at the Sun to judge what time it was. It was starting to set now and a corona circled it and made it look larger. "Good", Charlie murmured to himself, "The wife with be happy with me tonight as she can go and buy a present for herself".

Visit from daughter and family

Where have they gone, those days of the past?
Sat by smoking fire at our place at last
Our dog pushes in front to singe his fur
Cat comes too and receives warning Grr!
We all breathe in to be close to the hearth
Jill soon comes out with kids fresh from the bath

They grin having had fun in the frothy water
Now they're hand in hand with Jill my daughter
She loves coming to this cottage of ours
They're here in one of her husbands posh cars
She'll drive home (he likes a whisky or two)
Or book taxi for they have money to

We had a good meal they like dining out
All dishes were empty no messing about!
We gave them some eggs thought that would be fair
She had been cutting and setting my hair
She touched me gently helped to lift me up
House felt empty, kids now gone, we washed up

Tell me about the war

I dreamt I was a child again
Listening to the planes above
Those days there was no peacefull dove

Once we used to play in the fields
When Spring sang songs and hearts did throb
Then guns and bombs all that did rob

For war is mean and lips are sealed
'Til fighting and death take their fll
Mobs cheer but we are quite still

But I have become an old man
Soon to approach the pearly gates
What use that war now we are mates?

I got a call

I got a call to the hospital
As old friend of mine had passed away
It 's sad to lose a mate from years past
So left my house to say my good day

Streets deserted because of virus
No, was not that which claimed old Bertie
For death had stalked him for quite some time
Matters not how he had died today

Took my mask to be on the safe side
His wife still held him by his right hand
Gave her a hug and sat beside her
I chatted to him like any day

She thanked me coming there all that way
But then she said such a strangest thing
"Glad I was able to be with him
Not like virus patients pass away"

"As he had a stroke" she now told me
For many months I'd known all along
"So he flown away without a fuss
Have the funeral next week one day"

She felt sorry for other ones there
As corona virus spread around
"I don't recall locking up my house"
"I'll sell and get place close to the Bay"

Our eyes meet

The shops cash register went ping
I turned my head to glance that way
My eyes did meet the girl's at the till
Yes I knew her, her name was Jill

Used to be at school together
When young and free and I fell in love
With every girl that I did see
But not her, she didn't fancy me

Put my purchase on the counter
So she could scan it at the till
She glanced at me then said aloud
"Hey, I missed you" (There was no crowd)

I twisted round, we were alone
So spoke "Do you fancy a date?"
Her shining eyes and mine did meet
She turned and said "Must be discrete!"

So the wheel of fortune spun around
I did break all the rules for her
Did tread the road of infamy
Instead of honest monogamy

Our sighs though were not in the press
Though we met for more than a year
As winter came and snow flakes fell
She wept "It's over" that phrase from hell

Childrens laughter

A trace of childrens laughter woke me from my sleep
Let my eyes open wide; no, not a single peep
My dog lay at my feet fast asleep in the shade
Where were tose kiddies that sound they surely made?

Perhaps it was a dream of many years ago
When my children raced about eyes all aglow
When I used to join in their chasey games with them
Oh the laughs and joys in those days of sheer bedlam

When Ma relished break from cooking kids licking lips
They and I would get pizzas or some fish and chips
We get it walking to the shops quite close to us
The owner knew the kids gave kids candy; a plus!

For some odd reason the shop was painted bright green
But the place was always crowded and was quite clean
There were lacy curtains on the large window front
Plus table with magazines if reading was your want

Knowing we were regulars served us well did he
When we paid and picked up order extras there'd be
By such design as this we'd always patronize
For in his shop was best service and that's no lies

It's sad to think too much of the past long ago
Bite to eat at fish shop or way my wife's eyes shone
Our kids playing with their spears and bows and arrows
Our memories like this are our joys and sorrows

A walk in the misty wild

In the bush for a walk, we did watch birds
It's what we did roaming far from home
Through trees, across plains and mountains too
An excellent pastime for just us two

We'd both have a stick for safety's sake
In case we were set on by a snake
We didn't say too much as we walked
As the birds would fly high if we talked

We didn't steal eggs or chop up the plants
Just took photos if we had close glance
Never touch a nest with new eggs there
They were baby birds not meant to share

Took photos of birds we'd not yet seen
Scribbled notes of where we had just been
They were the only tokens of our visit
Why spoil what was qite exquisite?

Oft other walkers would make us cringe
Who may have come to just gawk and whinge
Have no care what harm they might well do
Leave tokens of the visit which accrue

Forewarned, forearmed the best way to go
No to leave ltter which is a big no!
Lest we form ideas in creatures mind
No sign of rubbish if we are kind

No plastic trash or ropes to cause snags
Or smoking there and discarding fags
Not plastic tape or rubbish to harm
And the wild with no cause for alarm

The forest darkens

The sun was asleep this winter's evening
And a chill wind blew though each forest tree
While a lone wolf by chance now crossed my path
And a merry owl blinked his eyes at me

The trees darkened but the owl gave no hoot
Darknesses cloak took his time to swagger
He took off to find some prey to bother
He knew that without a light I'd stagger

Oh where was the bright moon this cloudy night?
I stumbled into tendils hanging low
There is slim chance I'll escape from the trees
What on earth is this itch below my knees?

Not sure this is the place where I came in
Yes it is, I see where my car is parked
It's underneath the old acacia tree
Think I should be home by half past three

One dark and dirty night

I was leaning against the bar
Steamed up as I had lost my girl
Glittery lights flashed far and near
It was the season for good cheer

Not drunk so much but stomach churned
A crowd of revellers came in
And shuffled up to buy their drinks
Pretty girl looks at me and winks

This lass did cheer me up a lot
As she grins whilst still with her crowd
More people now surge through the door
Must be trippers a the coach tour

One brief moment she touches me
I grab that moment and so kiss her
"Thanks, my first kiss tonight" she says
Liked her lots, told her "My name's Les"

"How about you, is your name Jean?"
She laughed out loud, "Would you like that?
"No, just that you seem familiar"
"You're right, were both in school's last year"

Sparkling Eyes

That sad story we do tell ourselves
Trying to hide our faults on high shelves
S'pose we all hunger for the past
Opening our minds who we once were
Choking with sadness when we lost her

Yet days do not weary anymore
Once when filling them was quite a bore
Should we reminisce about the past?
Or try to put that aside for good
Does it matter if misunderstood?

So love hurts if that fire is put out
It's not a sin to cry or to shout
Or to jump queue in the line of love
Where one must fly high to win the prize
On the grounds that she has sparkling eyes

So off we go

There was a lick of light through the curtain
As the crack of dawn made her appearance
Bird in tree's branches waves hello to me
Keeping time with her family of three

I like my garden and I love my wife
They're the two best things that are in my life
That's until our new baby brings us joy
Times imminent already got one toy

I won't be happy till baby's here
Must be calm but inner feelings do fear
I prefer the rhythm of garden tree
Soon I'll hold her hand and new baby see

I turn to see my wife's sleeping face
Her clothes are all packed in one single case
Then she whispers "Time"  just one single word
So off we go, cheeped on by just one bird

They're comng of age

The millenials are marching
They're coming of age
The boys are champions
Have looks like a sage
The girls are luscious
They are marching too
Rights are their wishes
Which will come they're hoping

The millenials are singing
(A bit out of tune)
It's no milk sop army
But movement brewing
This bright afternoon
Crowds are thickening
They're playing their cards
And they aim is winning

They've reached the park with bells ringing
Crowd sits down waiting
For first one to speak
Talks of corruption
Nature, climate change
Melting ice, forests
Water theft and more
Then there's over fishing

No subject for them is off the cards
Greed rules the planet
For them truth is clear
Wars are for profit
So millionnaires grin
Meanwhile all the crowd
Want an honest life
And to end the charades

On Struggle Street

Here I am on Struggle Street
I've no money to make ends meet
And ask myself what it all means
Nothing in life is what it seems

Could you spare a dime (or more)
I'll work hard til my hands are sore
Start early until clock chimes six
Tell the truth I'll not play tricks

Straight up honest by design
Dare not with wife and bub of mine
As for conduct I don't do crime
I'll be at work all the time

Probe all you like about my past
I want this job and it to last
I'll be there on site at first light
At your side I'll do things right

Okay, okay! The job is yours
Mind you, It's sack if you give cause
Thank you boss, I won't make a mess
Wife can now buy a new dress

Planning Christmas

Cats collide being rained upon
Dry summer days have now long gone
Evening light fades
I flick my braids
Finger them now
Shy smile on show
Toddler sister follows me round
Without making one sound

I like autumn when the leaves fall
From the sycamore tree tall
Scuff feet in leaves
Dad checks the eaves
Wear socks for hose
And warm night clothes
With our Lounge fire hot as a forge
And lots of snacks and food shall gorge

Might get dressed up for Halloween
Perhaps I'm too old at sixteen?
Roads now icy
Driving's dicey
Salt is now spread
Got hat on head
Snuggling is good with my boyfriend
Check Christmas lists that never end

Lightning flashes

My wife has a phobia with lightning flashes
So runs to the bedroom off she dashes
Grunts with fear pulls covers over her head
I meanwhile come indoors to toast some bread
Put my car keys on hook by the front door
Just as stroke of lightning makes a roar
The wind now wails and seems to stamp its feet
Followed by power blackout game complete
Seems that the bad weather has won this shot
As rain rails down I'm amused not one jot
Groping for doors got idea in my head
To join my wife cuddled up in warm bed
Weather levelled out after a a while
When lights came back on wife's a mass of smiles

Greedy, wasteful, blind

We are ignorant and flawed creatures
Greedy, wasteful, blind in a crisis
We light fires to that which gives us breath
No belief that climate will change
When oxygen disappears from Earth

Earth is of course constantly changing
But it will remain it is not the end
Unless you need oxygen to breathe
We and all other creatures will die
Then green trees willl again conquer Earth

That is of course if the rain still falls
So the trees and plants are watered
Perhaps oceans can then recover
But for our plastic waste choking life
From living in the sad wounded Earth

But mark my words all you readers
Mankind will not be number one
The impact will be great, that's no lie
Loss of breath, loss of lives, we have failed
Escalating our demise on Earth

How bizarre

I saw you once again

My, how strange, I saw you standing there
At busy Victoria tube station
On London's Underground yesterday
You had got off the other platform
Didn't catch sight of me boarding here

They gave the all clear and we moved
You took the exit way unaware
How bizarre, you were my first true love
We had spent so much time together
Doubt you'd worry now or even care

I'd made my offer to you after school
A couple of dates; you played the field
Clear you didn't want ties at that time
Or thought I was a shallow man then
Wonder if she'd fancy an affair?

Nah! I'd only crash again

The day did shine

The air was still, the day did shine
As summer sun beamed down on us
My veins throbbed and some shade I sought
I mowed the lawn, the pets looked on
I wonder where my wife has gone?

She's usually part of the team
But has taken off in the car
Probably to fill up the tank
Will be back soon I have no doubt
Pets have now disappeared from view

Back door opens here come the crew
Dog's tail wagging furiously
Creating quite a fuss, wife grins
"I went to get some ice cream
Come on in before it all melts"

The dog barked then jumped a rope
The cat looked on from the back door
I packed up, put mower away
Lucky me, words are not enough
Love my wife she's without a match
