A strange land

It is the fourth month we've been in lockdown
Slowly the rules for breath and distance are eased
I sit in cafe by myself alone
A friend joins me as manager condones
Before I would be standing on a cross
Queuing up to get my drink in carton
Only to sit outside with coffee in hand
While thinking to myself what a strange land

For it's worked the virus is in control
But the state's border I still cannot cross
Unless I quarantine for fourteen days
That's OK seeing Covid's nasty ways
They have started playing sport again too
Few fans permitted so stadium looks bare
But my team won last night so I am pleased
It's good to see regulations now eased

So what's the bad you probably ask me
It seems that for weeks so little I've done
Not been to movies, family barely seen
I've got older but nowhere have I been
I've eaten a lot and put on some weight
Feel so much nearer that pearly gate
Winter's now here (though it's Summer for you)
Let's all be careful in future, Toodle-oo!

With stick in my hand

Had nothing to do
Need somewhere to be
So I went for a walk
Just where could I go?
Perhaps down the beach
Breathe in the sea air

The walk was not far
With stick in my hand
Not many around
Watchng clouds and sand
Soon standing at prom
Kids play without care

Did I bring wallet?
I fancy a sit
At café for drink
So walk a long way
To find the right place
Kath's Kafe by name

Girl behind counter
Smiles sweetly at me
Took order, that's done
A 'cappo' and cake
Grabbed paper to read
Do a crossword game

Found table with view
People watching's good
Better than the news
Coffee came along
Waitress smiled at me
Life's a poem dear

Age sees world anew
Fold hands to relax
Spilt coffee down shirt
Woman grins at me
Matters not, I'm old
I welcome each year

Love my life

I am an old man now
And haven't long to go
But each day I find a way
To while away my long days
In doing crosswords

I go to a cafe
Which suits me just "parfait"
Order a coffee and cake
Which I hope is freshly baked
Newspaper in hand

I then sit in a seat
To rest my poor old feet
Then check today's crossword
Engrossed I hear not one word
In that fine cafe

You may think I'm quite mad
Or an old fool that's sad
Then a sweet lass comes right up
With a steaming coffee cup
Makes my day for for me

I'm in there every day
Those grls oft come my way
Smile and talk of this and that
Husbands, boyfriends, wedding chat
I listen every day

So the crossword's now done
Quenched my thirst ate my bun
I've words for my next rhyme
Come to me in nick of time
Love my life these days

Talk and a smile

I was watching as I often do
Drinking my coffee eating my bun
It is one of my pleasures still
Now my age is nearly eighty one

She sat at a table close by me
Finishing her snack now looked at mine
Had lost her right arm so used her left
Reading the newspaper on page nine

We chatted about not much at all
Of her marriages and children too
Her time in Uni and her working life
Even her lost arm was not taboo

Then as she started to take her leave
She thanked me for the conversation
It's easy to brighten someone's life
With talk and smile, no obligation

This in fact happened to me the other day as I had a cappuccino in town; the only problem with chatting for about an hour with a stranger was that when I finally grabbed the paper from her I found she had done the crossword which I like to do each day!
