Old Bertie's wife

Old Berties wife had died
She's been ill for some time
He found her absence strange
Cryng for her for such a long time

It was cancer of course
And she fought like a tiger
To get fit and well again
But her check ups did not agree

Then one day Bertie came home
To find her crying in bed
She was in so much pain
So he called an ambulance

Told them he would follow
He could tidy the place
Then get to the hospital
Not too long after them

Whe he finally arrived
She was being examined
Then moved to intensive care
We'll keep her in, the nurse said

She was in there for weeks
But she never complained
They worked to ease the pain
And try new drugs to help her

Bertie went in every day
And stayed for hours chatting
His wife was always hopeful
But she never returned home

Then one day a few hours
After Bertie had gone home
The hospital rang him
Saying that his wife had died

Adding "Do not hurry back"
So Bertie left the house
And slowly drove back there
For one last kiss, his last goodbye

I'll catch up with you

The air was cool and the candle flickered

Remembering kissing your lips one last time

And that was oh so many years ago

Holding you tight under the mistletoe

You ditched your boyfriend, so that pleased me

I was no dancer in fact you led me

Nodding your head like a referee

Following your footsteps, that's if I could

With my face looking like a piece of wood

We married of course, had kids one, two, three

But sadly I know those days are long gone

For your beautiful eyes no longer shone

You closed your sleepy eyes one last time

Now I'm lonely, lurking, hearing bells chime

I'll catch up with you I will guarantee

What you love you must love now

It is the look in their eyes that counts
She returned my glance the trap was set
Lowers hers so I can reel her in
She wriggles a bit, but I still win

Her name is Roseanne my sweetest rose
Those soft warm hands they belong to me
Kiss her, she murmurs contented sigh
Opens her eyes, looks up says "I must fly"

She drives off to work, I work at home
We make love each and every night
I grab a coffee, get down to work
I'm self employed so can never shirk

I get a call about half past ten
Been an accident, she's had a crash
Hospital advising of the fact
She is injured from the cars impact

So I say I'm coming right away
Have to cancel a late visitor
It took me half hour to make the trip
She'd died and my sad tears then let rip

She told me once why she loved me
She could find no other any place
Once recalled snuggled up brow to brow
She'd said, "What you love you must love now"

I misjudged her

Her star sign was Cancer
Perhaps that's a warning
Now that she has ripened
As an adult with zip

Those leather belts she wears
The way she walks and turns
Silver bangles jangling
Now who wears kirby grips?

Empty pleasures attract her
Horse racing's betting ring
Flaunting her new oufits
Girl, you give me the pip

The way she laughs out loud
Her silly wave to me
I recall who she was
My girl in a gym slip

When I had op on my spine
Of my friends she was the first
To visit me and that's
How to measure friendship

Rocking with grief

The wonder years have gone
Your smile is rarely seen
Tucked up in bed asleep

Greatness of days now gone
No more splashing surf
Nor travelling roads long

Words from your lips are gone
Your eyes see not the day
But yet you still breathe on

Your friends have come and gone
You hear not whistling wind
Or cars in street below

I'll hold hands 'til you've gone
You still defy death's call
As I rock with grief's pain

"She won't know that you've gone"
The nurse says "Take a break"
"Go home and get some food"

Phone rings to say "She's gone"
"Careful don't hurry back"
The night that my wife died

Another boring day

The chairs are empty by my bed
My visitors I see have gone
All is now quiet in my room
Outside sun still weakly shone

I can recall falling at home
That was I think a month ago
I'm still in a hospital room
Hearing traffic in street below

Miss my house in the countryside
This city is a noisy place
Where ugly money reigns supreme
Traffic, crowds, noise with no good grace

Then at night the dark side reigns
Spruikers, call girls to name just two
Drunks evicted protesting still
Bats of the night around they flew

The evening here is a quiet one
Pills dispensed are now locked up tight
But now choppers blades thrum away
Emergency patient lands tonight

The chairs still empty by my bed
Temp and blood pressure now begun
Curtains are closed on waning moon
As another boring day is done

Author's note: In case you were thinking of asking; No, I am not back in hospital I just wrote what my brain told me to.

Close to the town centre

Close to the town centre
Where many people go
Is a place I used to know

It is a botanic park
Green with calm serenity
Just the place for picnic tea

There's a gaunt drab building near by
Peering through the swaying trees
It’s a hospital one sees

There anxiety rules the roost
And a visit one should not pay
That would surely spoil your day

Sure there’s fruit, jello and kindly words
But also blood and ouch and tests
And strict rules for family guests

Meals are bad and blood they love
Then they’ll waken you in fright
As they pester you at night

Should you care to walk that park
And calmly feed the little birds
Think of me lying in my turds

“I’m busy now patient X
Leave your bed you must not dare
For others please have some care”

Waiting

At the hospital
Is that baby’s cry I hear?
A new life is born

At the hospital
That noisy lad’s now quiet
Had his tonsils out

At the hospital
Young woman came at midnight
Appendix now gone

At the hospital
The waiting room is full up
Some moan, some drink tea

At the hospital
Man on crutches is all smiles
He has been discharged

At the hospital
Family talk quietly
Grandma has just died
