What was her name?
Oh, what was her name?
How the years are cruel
I still see her eyes
It's her that I blame
Beckoned to the woods
Resting by her fire
"Sit by me" she says
"Come let's play a game"
Wood smoke drifted up
Sleepy, my eyes closed
She then spoke to me
My mind she did claim
These words she whispered
"Take care of my world
There's those that mean harm
For greed is their name"
Now I am like her
I can talk to owls
Creatures scamper up
With me they are tame
Warning signs they show
When nature needs help
Birds, beasts and insects
All to me they came
Fish would do as well
With mouths all agape
With them I had doubts
But they were in pain
Troubles others told
Foolishness of man
Ruining the wild world
Just for their own gain
I'm a wanted man
Just like that woman
Many years ago
Cybele her name

Cybele was the Phrygian and Greek Earth goddess and clearly needs help if she is seeking assistance from me to preserve the beautiful wild places!

Remembering
Now lest you think me a pagan ass
Remember I talk with forked tongue
Once when I was so very young
At school I sat dumb in Latin class
Why was I learning a language dead
Spake by Romans as conquests they made
As with nubile maidens down they laid
Except now by chemists to earn their bread
I was bored completely in my brain
So carved my initials in the desk’s top
My knuckles wrapped soon did make me stop
Teacher said my future was down the drain
If only he’d told of their heroic deeds
Monsters and voyages far from home
Of gods and goddesses sowing seeds
Then my mind would not have roamed
I couldn’t wait for the class to end
To get out on the sports field with a ball
Then joyfully homeward I could wend
Now hand in hand with my sweet gal
Now hand in hand with my sweet gal

We meet at night
Charon the Ferryman
I’ve woken again
I smell sulphur in the air
Do you hear moaning?
This dark is fearful
Unholy sounds are amplified
Yes, it’s me they want
They’re here to collect
I agreed to pay in full
So don’t criticize
I’ve had a good life
Had a devil of a time
Must pay ferryman

Potted (potty) Aesop
I thought three of Aesop's fables could be retold in haiku form to get good value for money.
1. Boy floundering in river
Boy drowning calls help
Scolded for his carelessness
“Save me! Moan later”
Moral – Help first, admonish after
2. Crow and pitcher
Thirsty crow finds jug
Water there but cannot reach
Drops stones to raise up
Moral – Results achieved little by little
3. Dove and the Ant
Ant fell in river
Dove dropped twig to save him
Ant bites dove’s hunter
Moral – Every good turn deserves another
