Love's Sparkle

How easy that it was to tell
The young couple were in love
Someone must have cast a spell
The youth had come out of his shell

There was a certain sparkle there
It was the look, the way they’d move
She was all dewy eyed with joy
For at last she now had her boy

He held her close and touched her soft
This was the way that he would prove
For there was no other in his life
He clearly desired her for his wife

Your jet black hair

I dreamed of you last night
Of your long jet black hair
That you tossed without a care
And the depth of your dark eyes
Which you knew I was aware
In Christmas party's lustful sighs

Just where have you gone?
Why in my dreams do you I see?
From...Oh so very long ago
Those years have passed us now
When we said those last goodbyes
You just left, just why? just why?

Now that I am old and grey
Would you know me from those days
Of gentle kisses and much more
The thrill of planning the evermore
That all came to a stop so sudden
These memories now are a burden

A Technicality

Always in the wrong
A thousand eyes are on me
Now I burn with guilt

Am I beyond help?
My choices are not best made
I am here again

Looking at my brief
Hoping he finds a snag
I try not to sweat

He is unconcerned
An actor's fine performance
A talk fest for him

High above the court
Now clutching at the bars rail
Wait for the verdict

The judge has returned
His summing up confuses
I start to panic

Grins from the defence
Freed on a technicality
Good, I'm home again

The Young Lovers

He glanced toward her
Her eyes captivated him
They were full of life

He loved her sweet smile
Sparkling with the bloom of youth
Would she notice him?

She nodded shyly
When he asked her on a date
And her cheeks reddened

"Too soon" they all said
When he told that he'd proposed
For they were both sure

On the wedding day
They could see just each other
But nobody else

Joyfully for them
A gleam was in her bright eyes
When a baby moved

Marriage a delight
Stars for them were their children
Seas of memories

How the years have passed
Yet they look at each other
Just like young lovers

A symphony of delight

I noticed her
There at the bus stop
So I dared to speak to her

It was so cold
She was wrapped up warm
And happy to talk to me

I asked her out
Jazz club "No", film "Yes"
Held hands in the cinema

She loved music
Sang in a chorus
Got ticket for "Iolanthe"

So I loved her
While tripping hither
Now married with three children

Music was then
The food of sweet love
A symphony of delight

She has misty eyes

She is tall, aloof
I often notice her here
Stood at the bus stop

I saw him again
Was he just glaring at me
O the cheek of him

I love her sweet smile
There is of touch of sadness
She has misty eyes

He is not that bad
He smiles and has laughing eyes
No, I must not look

I do love her hands
There's no ring on that finger
I feel so alive

Will he speak to me?
I can see that he wants to
Yes, he's going to

Song Sings (No. 28)

Another visit to Dum and Yum's world

Song sings

The village where Dum and Yum lived had been rebuilt after the storm and flood that had ripped off many of the roofs and knocked down the fences around their vegetable plots. The violent fall weather was over and everyone was looking to stock up for the winter to come.

Song the spirit woman would often wander off alone and sit on a high point of land and look for a long time into the sky but not tell anyone what she was looking for. She did this after the sun had set which was a dangerous time to be away from the village. Finally Yum could not stand it any more and when should could speak to Song alone she asked her what she did at night alone.

Song shook her head sadly. “I do not know but there is sometime out there” and then she pointed to the sky. “There is something telling me to look in the sky at night. So I am waiting to see what it is”.

“But it is not safe, Song” pleaded Yum.

“When the Great Spirit one calls me I will go. If I get a message I will listen. If I feel that something will happen I will look around me. Don’t worry Yum, go and lay down with Dum else he will come looking for you and then the whole village will be looking at the sky with me”.

So Yum walked sadly home. Dum grunted as she entered their hut. He was playing with the children and was glad that she was home at last. When they had got the children to sleep Yum told Dum about Song sitting on the hill overlooking the ocean as though she was waiting for some thing.

The sun had set and the children were now asleep so Yum said to Dum. “I am not happy that Song is out there alone. Go to her and make sure she is safe and try to persuade her to come back home.”

Dum looked doubtful so Yum went on “When you come back I will warm you up” she then placed her hand on his chest and lift it up and touched his face.” He knew then he could not refuse. She knew the way to his heart and so nodded in agreement.

Dum took a firebrand with him and carefully followed Yum’s instruction as to where Song might be. It took him some time but eventually by the light of the moon he could see Song’s outline on the hillside. She was looking at the moon.

He softly called to her, “Song, it is me, Dum”

“Come sit, Dum. So Yum has sent you to look after me has she? You have a woman among many to trust her man with this woman alone.”

Dum laughed. “You are here, I am here but what else is here that is the mystery? You know when things happen, don’t you?”

“We are a pair Dum”, she replied. “We both have gifts; you can see what we can make of this world to make our lives better.  And I….I can foretell what is to happen. Tonight I feel some thing will happen and we will see it together.”

So they both sat down looking down over the darkened landscape towards the sea some way off. The sky was almost clear and a cool wind blew gently from the shore.

Dum sat looking out towards the sea and Song hummed some words then she noticed the moon slowly being darkened not by clouds but by a shadow slowly biting into its side.  Song nudged Dum “Look, look at the moon Dum! Something is covering the moon.

Dum stared at the moon’s disc and slowly, minute after minute a dark shadow was covering the moon’s face. “Is it dying, Song?”

Song started to cry out, “Mother Moon, what is happening to you?” She stood up and stretched her arms. “Do not leave us mother Moon, we need you lighten our darkness.”

Dum looked at Song face and could see tears wet on her face. Then she started to sing a mournful song of longing that he had never heard before. She didn’t stop all the while the moon’s face darkened. Finally the moon was completely covered by a dark mantle even Dum had a tears in his eye. What was happening to his world? He wondered.

On and on Song sang her lament until finally moon satisfied that someone cared for her showed a spark of light on her rim. The light grew bigger and bigger and still Song sang. Finally after they had been on the hillside for hours the moon shone fully again.

Song exhausted collapsed on the ground. Dum held her close to him not knowing what to do. He had never been that close to her before and he could smell the scent of her body, a mixture of flowers and herbs. He brushed the hair from her face and she slowly recovered.

“Go home now Dum” she said hoarsely.

He shook his head. “We go back together, Song.”

She nodded reluctantly “Tell Yum to see me tomorrow, but tell no one else of this mystery. No one, do you understand?”

Made in heaven

What did I just say?
It was a lunatic thing
I said “I love you”

My head is spinning
A spaceship out of control
“You? Me? Forever?”

Angels spread their wings
And usually tread with care
They have been busy

Our planets collide
A stunning supernova
I’ll be the loser

Should I endeavor
To get out of this tangle
"No, I do love you"

You've stars in your eyes
Eternity is good for me
You are my sunshine

Born on Christmas Day

For those who on this day were born
There is not much joy at all
Celebrations for a more worthy one
Has left us hurt, sad and so forlorn

Christmas is of course a treat
Presents yes and carols too
With trees and candles and all the rest
But my birthday has missed a beat

I know all about the manger and the hay
Of lots of food and games to play
But I wished I’d arrived in June
Rather than to be born on Christmas Day

Author's note: Please direct no sympathies or wishes to me as Christmas is not my birthday!

Shame

                                                 Rock Art, Kakadu National Park

In nineteen sixty seven
As a new Australian
An immigrant no less
Registered to vote
I was now entitled
To say whether
The Aboriginal people
Of this great land
Been here for about
Forty thousand years
Should be given the vote!
Was I proud?

Whiteys came scarcely
Two hundred years ago
“Terra Nullis”
 they said
Empty that is except for
A culture older than theirs
Art telling their history
Stories of their beliefs
A strict rule of law
Education for the young
Dancing to inspire
Songs to weep over
I was shamed

                                       Mother Tree by Mrs Wallace

Yet Again

To be blunt
I'm as drunk
As a skunk
Yet again

You've been gone
For so long
Now I'm down
I've no brain

I'm so sick
Lethargic
Been in the nick
It's a pain

Please come home
Hate it alone
And I'm all done
Ring me Jane

Thanks for the call
You said it all
I'm on the ball
Catch the first train

A candle was lit

'Lily my flower'
Her Grandmother who'd named her that
Had been called to God

Now everyone wept
Lily and the congregation
At the funeral

Some words were spoken
The congregation sang hymns
It was Lily's turn

A candle was lit
And Lily carried it up
To say her goodbye

She didn't look sad
As she thought of her grandma
For she was smiling

The brief case

I looked in all places
Just for that information
I needed right now

But had you been here
You would have found it quickly
You were organised

I searched all the drawers
Even turned out the cupboards
And tore out my hair

So desperate me
Pulled out all the suitcases
Even your briefcase

I opened that up
And rummaged through the contents
This sure stopped me dead

There was a letter
Decades old, from you to me
But was never sent

You had been so cross
I had upset you so much
So you told me so

I knew your tears fell
When writing that sad letter
As mine now did too

You've been long gone
Yet you showed in your love then
That love conquers all

Lesson in sustainability

Ogre peered from his cave
Sadly gazed through the haze
Straining his old eyes
To glimpse the horizon
And searching for the sight
Of that far distant cape

“It’s been many eras”
His voice murmured gruffly
Tugging at his cruel chains
“Ages since I traipsed there
The old times have long gone
With cute maidens to rape”

“Mythological men
Who believes in us now?
Water nymphs and monsters
Inflamed by our passions
Deranged by jealousy
Roaming the landscape”

“We were terrible then
But couldn’t sustain belief
You humans do worse now
As we just gnawed on bones
But they have filet of beef
And call their pancakes, crepes”

“No, I’m used to this life
And would feign exchange it
A tremor I will cause
When I tug on my chain
But you destroy the earth
Turning it to moonscape"

A child in a manger

They had to get away
For she was pregnant
It just wasn’t safe there
Looking at her husband
He was the main arranger

He had shaved his beard
And paid their money over
Now they had nothing left
As they waited for a boat
To get away from danger

Hundreds like them gathered
To sail away from there
And find a brighter future
For freedom was their goal
To be their life changer

They boarded a tiny boat
Packed in huddled together
She and others were sick
Their water ration low
Some too spewed anger

Their boat when finally seen
Was diverted from their goal
Unloaded on a navalship
Taken to a distant shore
To house them in a hangar

Her baby made his move
Into this world must come
Taken to their promised land
A hospital bed for her
In the land of bush rangers

He husband was not there
Tired, scared and voiceless
Strange people helped her through
An Aussie child born one day
His cot was like a manger

This land settled long ago
By convicts and all such
Accepting most that came
Will now turn its back on them
For it fears this bad stranger

War Games

Summer of Discord
Foolish men discussing peace
Neither a winner

A compact of lies
To both each other and us
Death's scythe comes reaping

I'm learning to walk
Unaware of wars cruel threat
Parents fear the worst

We start a new life
Hate devastation and death
None are neglected

My childhood lessons
Jubilant, peace comes at last
Yet another lie

We still play the game
Conflict always our boardgame
Man's foolish hobby

It seems like yesterday

Air raid shelter built in urban street WW2

I was not yet nine
It seems like yesterday
The war was raging

Poverty was close
Everything was still rationed
Even for small boys

The cupboad was bare
For we lived from week to week
Nothing stored away

So we kept chickens
Gave them scraps and left overs
So they gave us eggs

School fed us each day
Gave us a bottle of milk
Frozen in winter

Mother had a job
No one to look after us
So we boys ran wild

We roamed the dark woods
Explored derelict buildings
Glorious springtime

In the evening
We sat by the radio
Our entertainment

Bombers flew above
Army convoys filled the streets
Great fun for small boys

So may years have passed
All this is stored in my mind
We have learned nothing

Sweet breezes

The air was still, warm was the sun
And sweat in our eyes was no fun
This work now started was quite hard
Picking apples in the orchard
We were gathering the harvest
But we needed a spot of rest

Soon a lunchtime break was called
So our toil was finally stalled
We all scattered to find some shade
Down to the grove of trees we made
A cool stream trickled in that spot
Sat down, the days work we forgot

We gazed out on the sylvan scene
Able to rest from that routine
We ate our fill then cuddled in
I bent over and kissed her skin
What splendor was my view that day
Sweet breezes blew her hair astray

Our joy was sadly brought to nought
A rattling bell our labor sought
This secular peal was not the tune
A real church bell would wed us soon
But money first we had to gain
Before our marriage that was plain

She is my delight

She is my delight
When I see her sleeping there
The moonbeams kiss her

My girl of nature
Soft thunder of her beating heart
As the sun rises

Her scent drifts my way
The soft touch of her sweet breath
Inflaming my soul

I embrace her love
The rolling hills of her breasts
Always beckon me

Our stormy passion
A walk in the wild weather
Lightning in her hair

My eyes open wide
The rain falling on her cheeks
Telling a story

She murmurs some words
Wakes and wraps me in her arms
She is my delight

Just more of the same

Young Ann was hopeful
She was shy but she still grinned
So her mom was pleased

Tanya just shrugged
Tolerant of him for now
She couldn’t care less

Donna shook her head
Mom had brought home a boyfriend
Nothing but distrust

For she remembered
All the rows and the screaming
Just more of the same

My girl Jill

They shook their heads as oft they did
My parents knew of my desire
To travel far from my place of birth
To live my life for all I was worth

We were country folk of southern hills
Where hard farming was our sole graft
But all my mates did laugh and scoff
As I was one who sought a life far off

Despite this as soon as I was able
I said good bye to my parents sad
And stole a kiss from my girl Jill
This need for adventure for to fill

So off I went one fine morning
Left my home of many a year
I trekked over the hills to the sea
Where my life could be lived so free

I was but a stranger on that shore
And found life hard to fill my needs
I toiled on a job to pay my way
But so empty was my night and day

I drank too much, that’s for sure
My workmates speech was hard to read
And they laughed at my country ways
Taunting me ‘til I was ablaze

Waking in the gutter one morn
Of this life I knew I’d see enough
Adventure now had lost its thrill
I must go back to my girlfriend Jill

So I packed my bags and off I went
To make that uphill journey back
My heart now knew my love was home
No more from my cute Jill would roam

The sad song

I hear a sad song
“Where is the one that I love?”
The lonely bird calls

The trees whisper back
“Do come again in springtime”
Speak they to me too?

I see her soft eyes
And her limbs so lithe and brown
And sweet lips to kiss

“Will she dance for me?”
The trees only shook their heads
And dropped some sad leaves

The wind she moaned too
And blew cold on my poor heart
The message was clear

Just how many lives
Do we each expect to live?
Tears are my answer

I can live again

I look at her dance
Pirouettes of such longing
Memorable moments

Children’s loving hands
Lonely tear spills from my eyes
Pride and loneliness

Such stain on my heart
Heart’s sad flutter of regret
Cloudy with sorrow

Fateful decision
My miserable loneliness
Sad neglected life

Firm and resolute
Loving times not forgotten
I can live again
