This mermaid loves me

Seagulls piercing calls
Wild surf rolls in once again
Crabs scuttle away

The waves beckon me
"Welcome back son of mine
You are home again"

The beach deserted
Salty spume in the air
Wind in my sad eyes

Look, there's a dolphin
And bladder-wrack at my feet
Shellfish blow kisses

This mermaid loves me
She's from the sea whence I came
So beckons me home

I can not resist
Her tempting sad sirens call
"You belong with me"

Fleshy tones of love
Deep, deep as the oceans sigh
Clean my sins away

I weep salty tears
Rock me in those arms again
With your sweet solace

"How deep the ocean?"
If only I could fathom that
Who knows the answer

Still waters run deep
With sweet tidings of our lives
On your bosom lie

  1. So much is lost when we leave the ones we love, and when we return we are changed. I love the discoveries of kinships all the way into the mermaid/siren's arms.

  2. This reminds me of your short story...which world should we choose? If only there was a middle place...an easy solution...but perhaps that would make love seem less treasured...and special

  3. Who knows the answer indeed! Such a stormy sea of love...

  4. This reads as both fantasy and metaphor. Sirens are everywhere, calling us to places beyond our depth.

  6. the speaker reminds me of the lotos eaters...mesmerized and entangled in an enchanted world in an air of futility....a beautiful poem...

  9. A beautiful poem of the sea. Especially poignant: "rock me in those arms again with your sweet solace." So touching.

  10. Oh I love the way you tell it - like an old salt remembering something like hidden treasure.
Those sailors had to love her or it would drive them mad with her moods.

  15. Old Egg,

Such a close connection and love of the sea and its treasures. It is perhaps in one's blood with such a calling...

  17. Well, that's not such a bad way to go I guess, for an old sailor.

  18. I sigh at this as deep as the ocean sighs. Melancholic, but beautiful.
