Just like my dog

God so loves this our world
But man sadly hates it
God gives us all we need
But man wants so much more
There is enough on Earth
To satisfy us all
But we must now fight for
Every drop of water
Every grain of corn
Over every stone
We are urged to covet
All that our neighbour has

Sunday's we go to church
On Monday we buy stuff
Much made with slave labour
Walk past homeless people
Begging on the sidewalk
As we purchase these goods
That we don't really need
Covet other men's wives
Carry weapons, secrete knives
Yet despite all of this
Somehow God still loves us
In his strange holiness

I think I should love him
Just like my dog loves me

  1. Ugh, this is brutal and true. I am as guilty of any of this as anyone else is. You're right -- God's love is incredible and deep beyond any imagination.

This poem reminds me of Romans 2:4 --
"Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?"

  3. You tell it true, Robin. I wish we could all be as good a person as our dogs think we are.

  4. "Just like my Dog" Oh, yes. There are few contradictions in that holy love. No "despite"--or maybe in ways we don't know that loving dog practices forgiveness too! I love this:
    "Yet despite all of this
    Somehow God still loves us
    In his strange holiness"

  6. So much really is hypocritical, isn't it? To church on Sunday and buying 'stuff' on Monday...sigh. I do agree that if we would love God as our dog loves us it would be a wonderful world!

  7. it is sad isn't it. We should love God as much as our dogs love us and more. well put

  8. so true... oh we're such a hopeless lot of mammon worshipers, always running after the ephemeral...'Yet despite all of this / Somehow God still loves us / In his strange holiness'...such beautiful lines!

  12. So unlike many of your other love poems, but a love poem nonetheless.

  13. Oh yes, we must abstain from the lusts which war against the beautiful/holy hearts.... and live in righteousness…all the days of our life!!
