Timeless memories

Timeless memories
It was a moonless night
The stars too were shy
Twinkling at me
Like cute schoolgirls
Walking home from school
What were their names
Gone from my memory
Rolling down the hill of life
My heart’s still pulsing
At such a sweet thought
It moves me to tears
Furrows my old brow
My hopes turned to dust
Floating away with the days
As these cruel years
Keep rolling along
I am powerless now
It’s not what we have done
But what we have not
That is the rub in life

  3. Time is going on like that, and also schoolgirls become old... Maybe if we could remember the name of those ancients stars...

  5. That is indeed the rub - mind you school girls crush many a heart even if we remember their names

  6. I was a schoolgirl once. I think I just stated the obvious! I must be getting old too.

  7. Oh, yes, I suppose regrets can be the 'rub' in life, but really when I think about life as a whole....one can come to realize that if we had done some of the things we regret having not done, perhaps we would not be just where we are today. When I leave this earth, I will leave with no regrets.

  9. There are always times when one thinks about the chances they have missed in life.. I loved these lines:

    The stars too were shy
    Twinkling at me
    Like cute schoolgirls
    Walking home from school

    Excellent write :)

  10. I like the "turn" in the middle: "It moves me to tears." That line shifts the poem from a nostalgic reminiscence to a prophetic call.

  11. Such melancholy...

I agree with the sentiment. It isn't what we did, but what we didn't... that we will miss.

  12. Time is indeed a rub, but I think there is still so much more we can do as long as there is life there are new adventures.

  15. Memory floats into memory and is gone. I love the flirting images, how this poem is structured like the elusive memories themselves, like the possibility that some are not real.

  16. Oh YES! Not what we have done but what we have not......how these words resonate with me......especially now, with time so finite, as the years go by, marking time when there is no time to lose. Sigh. Fantastic, you hit the nail right on the heart! LOL.

    But what we have not
That is the rub in life'

  19. This is really wonderful. I have those melancholy thoughts myself - especially as I watch the students in my neighborhood returning to September classrooms. Those years of study, I think, are where some of our closest relationships are formed. When these old friends pass, there is a sadness, knowing, the closeness forged in such a special long ago time - will never be replaced.

  23. It's not what we have done but what we have not...truer words never spoken!

  24. And yet what we have not done...we might yet be able to do with tomorrow.
I might never sky dive or ride a horse all the way to the bottom of the Grand Canyon...but I can attempt to make the rest of this day and all of tomorrow and the days that follow brilliant for the smiles that can be shared.

Thank you for your kind words on 'Reigning in Expressions'.
