So says the wise owl

What vanity in this creature
That calls himself Homo Sapiens
And does his wisdom surpass all?
Beasts, birds and fish are merely peons?

His eyes tend to be not so hot
Uses just two of his long limbs
To walk or run which seems so strange
Voice that prattles at every whim

Animals fight for lives and kin
But humans do it just for fun
Hits with fists and spears and arrows
Fights as well with bombs and guns

This creature thinks he is so clever
Digs metal, chops trees just to make
Planes and ships for deadly war games
Not live in peace for pities sake

He plays with plastics and poisons
Then fouls the Earth with deadly waste
Knowing all that is very bad
So plans new home in far off space!

One day Earth with be clean again
The forests spring alive and green
Animals in safe habitat
The seas and rivers sparkling clean

  1. I think you mean the earth will be clean again when humans have vanished from Earth...which is a very sad thought indeed.

  2. I wonder if that day will come, given how selfish we are as a species and how destructive.

  3. Perhaps there will be a sign, that warns of danger and death. I loved your poem.

  4. That "One day" will definitely come without these foul Homo sapiens. Sad indeed...

  5. Vanity, vanity, all is vanity, says Dracula as he breaks the looking glass. I love that this poem is written in the voice of an observer. It implies to this reader that the earth will be cleansed of humans. Meanwhile, his "satire" shows exactly what humans need to change. Great poem!

  6. One of the things that separates us from the rest of the creatures on this planet is the vanity and arrogance of human beings. I agree with the lines:
'Animals fight for lives and kin
But humans do it just for fun'
and what the human race has done to the planet is unforgivable. I hope that:
'One day Earth with be clean again
The forests spring alive and green
    Animals in safe habitat
The seas and rivers sparkling clean'.

  7. Humans would have to vacate the earth for peace to reign.... what a mess we are!

  8. I see hope in your poem, the last line says it all. But, I see it with sadness because you may be right - human extinction may be necessary.

  10. What separates us from the animals is our nature that loves to dominate and pollute. Hopefully we will learn from this mistake.

  11. So true, Robin........and we appear to be a species slow to learn from experience and evidence. I read the animals are beginning to come out at night now, in order to avoid humans. Very smart.

To think all these will happen only when there are no more humans to cause all the distractions and destructions1

  15. We have no reason to be vain about being homo sapiens. We have done more harm than good to this planet! I have almost lost hope that this planet will be clean again. We will all drown in our debris, I fear.

  16. Luv your end-verse Eden which further poses the new question. Will it be as a result of human thinking and action
