The Teapot

I looked at her and she looked at me as I started to pick up the pieces.

It was as if the earth had stopped spinning as I had dropped the teapot we had received as a wedding present from her grandmother.

She looked both angry and sad as she loved her grandma the most in the world.

The teapot was a link to the past and I had broken that link.

Later that night in bed as we lay there just holding hands in the dark she eventually spoke.

“It’s not the teapot; it is me having to admit she has really gone.”

  1. So often our most honest thoughts and conversations occur just like this. I am glad she could recognize and admit that the loss of the teapot was symbolic for the pain of a greater loss. Very good story, Robin, very true to life! Thank you for participating in Six Sentence Stories with me, I appreciate you and your writing talents very much!

  2. I really like this. I understand. Sometimes having a tangible piece of someone makes it feel they are still with you. Well written piece.

  3. This was sadder than I first thought as I went through. No we can't go back after the link is broken. Just as we can't put the pieces together much better than Humpty Dumpty could. Nice write, O.E.

BTW, I have the pieces of two of my mom's coffee cups that my BIL's have broken. I am hoping for some good glue and some ..extra time.
