I listened to the river

I listened to the river
Now bubbling with such glee
Calm over its sandy bed
I love that it spoke to me

I often come here dreaming
Of those days just you and me
Water weaving past the trees
Like it did for you and me

I feel like an empty room
Heart rattling with so much space
Just to hear your voice again
Hope you are missing me

How I'd love you in my arms
We burned once with such desire
I'm empty like a cardboard box
Wish you'd light my fire for me

  1. The sense of loss and longing flows through this like a river... i hope there will be many things to fill that empty box

  2. I think I've been to that river at one point in my journey. There is a true sense of longing in this piece. A box is symbolic of change to me. Sometimes change is difficult.

  3. Another highly evocative piece Robin that resonates just as much with loving and eternal joys fondly remembered as it does with the pain of their loss... As ever, I admire your always firm and illuminating poetic style, but your honestly also...

  4. Despite the lilting verses, sadness pervades this poem. But what am I saying? Sadness pervades all of life, and if we don't acknowledge it, then we will be overcome by it. Thanks for taking me down to the river with you this morning, Old Egg. It's been a lovely, though melancholy, visit.

  5. Yes, one misses the beloved forever after, it seems. A testament to the love we have for them, as a wise doctor told me once.

  8. Oh Robin, the pain and longing is so palpable in this poem. Sigh.

  10. This is really a tender poem. The river is the perfect scene for such reflection.

  11. Cherished memories light up the scene.

  12. One of the first poems I every read (can't remember the title) was about a soldier who really wanted to go home to his wife. The poem was all longing and want. This poem reminds me of that. So much longer...

  13. Nicely written, Robin. Every verse was oozing with loneliness, a loneliness that would not be quenched. The first couple of divorce was like that but it gradually ebbed. I still have a stifled sob sometimes when I sigh. That was 51 years ago.
Like you, everything I write is not true. I started to write as a depressed person but I quickly changed it to a crochedy old man. I like to watch and hear the birds. I just don't like their pooping everywhere and dont like them well enough to have one for a pet.
One more item, were you a The Doors fan in another life? Your ending with "light my fire" helped me.

  14. Beautiful and poignant, Robin. 'I feel like an empty room' … Wow, what a line … so layered … so emotive … so evocative … it gave me shivers. Truly an impactful, indelible line of poetry. I have been married for almost a half century and those words sure resonated with the loss I know I would feel if/and/or/when the time comes.
