When I look into your eyes
When I look into your eyes
I see the girl I met at school
Sitting together laughing
Making fun of all the boys
When I look into your eyes
Remembering our sleepovers
Talking and laughing all night
Until Mum banged on the wall
When I look into your eyes
I see that girl rushing to me
To tell me of her first kiss
Then I told you of mine
When I look into your eyes
I see your tears of great regret
You liked the boy I did too
But we can't share him can we?
When I look into your eyes
So happy on your wedding day
With you kissing your husband
It is me crying, not you

A lovely memory of a friend now separated from another through marriage. It feels like nothing will ever be the same again,,,but the memories remain.
ReplyDeleteHeartbreaking, Robin. I can only imagine the pain squeezing the heart of the speaker. Those last few lines make me wish I could hug her.
ReplyDeleteOh, this just makes me so sad for the protagonist. It is clear how much she loves her friend. I hope she can find her own happiness someday.
ReplyDeleteWatching and wishing from the sidelines. Oh well...
ReplyDeleteah the loss & heartbreak..beautifully put...
ReplyDeleteThose old friendships are precious…as are all the feelings that accompany them…happy, sad, or a combination of both.
ReplyDeleteAah the price of friendship..hopefully it was worth the better memories..
ReplyDeleteLove and tears all around. I like the subtlety of naming winner and loser.
ReplyDeleteEach one of your poems is a joy
ReplyDeleteI always click on your link in anticipation of a love story and you never disappoint. This is an aspect of love that often happens between friends. It happened to me.
ReplyDeleteOuch...that would be a tough one for a friendship to endure!
ReplyDeleteA lovely tale of friendship sorely tested! Well written and captivating.
ReplyDeleteOh that ending...what a surprise... Sad sometimes how things don't always work out as one wants them to.
ReplyDeleteWhat a bittersweet story... hope there is another one in waiting.
ReplyDeleteA sweet sad story, beautifully told as always.
ReplyDeleteSad situation. Hope your next story is about how her broken heart heals.
ReplyDeleteTouching and emotive - tenderly rendered.
ReplyDeleteWhat a painful ending. I've been there many times.
ReplyDeleteOh wow....I have missed your stories so much...through your eyes I can see so clearly XXX
ReplyDeleteThose are sweet memories despite the remembrance of tears
