He woke with a start

He woke with a start
As Sue murmured in her sleep
He reached to touch her

But she wasn't there
He was all alone in bed
Lonely widower

She'd done this before
As she kept on coming back
To lie by his side

He could breathe her in
Feel the warmth of her presence
And hear her whispers

By morn she was gone
So should he find someone else
To stop her coming?

Some made eyes at him
He even dated one or two
It didn't feel right

Happier this way
He knew it was not the same
Without Sue in bed

  2. Oh this is soo beautiful..! Sigh it's often quoted that love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies. Beautifully penned. Thank you so much for participating at Prompt Nights and for your constant love and support :D :D

    Lots of love,
    Sanaa

  3. I can only imagine the sad feeling of loneliness, so the 3rd and 4th stanzas, I believe would be of comfort; especially with the closing verse as conclusion. An enjoyable read though through out.

  5. This is both so beautiful and so sad. Letting go of loved ones who have passed away is so difficult. And as much as we might romanticize the relationship between the dead and the living is just not healthy, when we treat them as if they were still alive... But letting go is just so hard.

  6. Lovely Robin and that dilemma of letting go and doing so without guilt. You explore it so well.

  7. The tragedy and sadness of having lost the companionship. In many instances they are not replaceable.

  8. A poignantly expressed moment of quiet grieving. There is acceptance in it, as there must be to continue on, but there is also affirmation of the strength of the love bond that unites them.

  9. The comic undertones in your piece also belie an air of sadness Old Egg - layers of dreams, and sheets and wishes..no..often we cannot replace our Sues..sadly

  10. Sad one. But, she really comes or does he feel her presence? Possible in love.
