No one's at the helm

There's more hate than love
In this world that seems so fair
For evil lurks there

We are so gifted
Save in compassion's strange realm
No one's at the helm

What of him and her
Is equality that hard?
Such is life's charade

We are all searching
Why can't we find our own God?
Isn't that so odd?

Were taught to compete
So we hate what others are
Our minds just like tar

Wars come and they go
Love is lost to hatred's gain
Many cheer life's pain

Just how can we change
Embrace our differences
And be fair to all?

  1. Such a hard question to answer. It seems really to understand why we focus on those small differences instead of all that's just the same.

  2. "Were taught to compete"..root cause of all evil.......i always believed that cooperation is better than competition...but policy makers think differently...

  3. it is not an easy world we live in... too much hate as well for my taste.. the only thing we can do is trying to make a difference... love those around us best as we can

  5. Life has been unfair for human nature makes it so. How to find solutions would be a problem that will be doggedly pursuit to no end! Great thoughts oldegg!

  6. Its a cruel world we all live in.. perhaps if there was enough love to spread then it would cross out all the pain & hatred..

  7. There is indeed far too much hatred. If we knew why would we be better at making it go away?

  8. We really have to work on embracing our differences and changing our attitudes, that is for sure. I think each of us must start with ourselves...and hope our example spreads.

  9. perhaps, that's the problem... making our own god

  10. I agree competition is at the root of it....we can only live our own life with kindness and compassion as a model. It does seem to be worse not better at times....these words really hit me:

'Love is lost to hatred's gain
    Many cheer life's pain'

It seems we revel in other's pain. Here our TV is all about that with these awful reality programs that espouse hate, pain and competition.

Robin this is a fantastic poem that hits the mark and asks us to pause and contemplate.

  12. I am not sure if it can be answered, Robin. differences should be understood and embraced... however, respect should always be considered in every situation.

  13. Such a difficult topic... and I think the answer would be made easy, if like Totomai suggested, "respect" entered the equation. I think too many are so bent on getting answers phrased in their own words, that they miss when someone is shining on them... May we all learn to see with the universe's eyes. Better yet, may we all learn to love others as they are.

  17. Hi Robin,

    My favourite stanza here is:

    "We are so gifted
    Save in compassion's strange realm
    No one's at the helm"

And I so agree we need to do better.. Thanks for your provocative piece - much appreciated.. With Best Wishes Scott

  18. Most people at their core, I believe, would like to be remembered as "a good person". And yet the world runs on self-interest. I don't get it. I don't think anyone has yet been able to account for such dichotomy in the objectives of humankind. It's pretty sad.

  19. I have a few achy tears from this poem. Here is the verse to which all else referred:
    "We are so gifted
    Save in compassion's strange realm
    No one's at the helm"
It is a gift;and it could steer us. I want to enter "compassion's strange realm."

  21. you touched on my fears for the world of today and tomorrow... it's so difficult to understand how people can do the things they do. a very moving piece!

  22. Oh I long for the day we will embrace our differences - but I fear we never will...
Oh that love be in the air.

  23. Beautifully penned! We need to work on the hatred front a lot.. these days young children are born with so much hatred in them, it really shakes me to read about violent outbursts from these young seeds!

  24. The pain of hate is so strong it will be hard to overcome.

  25. Sorry, if this is redundant, but I am not sure if my comment was entered or not.

Searching for the God within us is the way to go, all we have to do is open to the truth of it's all inside.

  26. The question is one that I don't think we have a clear resolution for especially when the world is so diverse. Maybe, someday we will have enough wisdom to find the answers.

  27. Hopefully love will prevail...xx

  28. It does feel like no one is at the helm and like hate far outweighs love, far too often, doesn't it? Love, love love. I'm convinced that's what needs to be at the helm.

  29. Old Egg,

With each daily turmoil around the world, one can truly be forgiven for often asking the question, 'Who is at the Helm,' as you have suggested. Very scary to feel abandoned to this fate..
