Feeling guilty
The stars wink out as night's silence is broken
Early birds start welcoming dawns gift of day
My brain charges me to get up like a child
Whose only options are to eat, sleep or play
So I do, out of the blue, jump out of bed
Skip shower, don jeans and sneakers "Hello Day"
It's a bit drafty out here, don't care, I'm wired
I'm off, I'm happy, don't care what you all say!
I"m on the walking trail, not many about
Just a twitter and hoot, but look there's a Jay
Tinkle of water means a stream is nearby
I stray from the path, take care, don't lose your way
The water's so clear and the bottom is sand
I sit on the bank, fish fry darting in play
And all manner of things, and weeds wave to me
Squeak behind as grey squrrel says "Go away"
But the clouds have come up; pity, just my luck
It looks stormy up there and now it's quite gray
That has marred my wonderful adventure out
Feeling guilty; as what will the nursing home say?

You nailed it with the last line..long may you adventure
ReplyDeleteI love that opening line, Robin, and your poem has inspired me to get outside and find an adventure!
ReplyDeleteHaha...I loved it. In retirement I have felt like a kid again with no agenda; just food, adventure and what will the day bring! Love this philosophy on life.
ReplyDeleteNo matter what our age, it is good to have those adventures. I loved the idea of walking this nature trail. Nursing home, be darned!! Life is to live.
ReplyDeleteAh adventures, never stop taking the detours Robin :)
ReplyDeleteAlways enjoy my visits here, Robin - your work always carries within it a gentle warmth of humanity, often with a trace of gentle humour too... This piece no exception
ReplyDeleteI'd sneak out of a nursing home too if I didn't get enough time wandering out in nature.
ReplyDelete"The stars wink out as night's silence is broken"... this is beyond exquisite!💖
ReplyDeleteYour morning adventure sounds like heaven to me. I'm glad you ventured out!
ReplyDeleteI think this is exactly what a good nursing home would prescribe...
ReplyDeleteI love the vibrancy of the narrator, escaping the nursing home where everyone else is sitting in dull-eyed boredom. Long may he adventure!
ReplyDeleteI love it. May we all find ways to occasionally escape the places we're supposed to be.
ReplyDeleteHa - I like the sense of adventure - enjoying the beauty of the day. The last line really was witty.
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha, love the last line in particular.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful and humorous piece.

Yes retirement does lend that kind of freedom to adventure. Enjoy those days of spotaniety.
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by my Sunday Standard today
Much🌼love
Loved this--so very adventurous in all the good ways--
ReplyDeleteI love this! It's good to be reminded that: we are never too old to entertain an 'adventure'. Indeed, it is, likely, one of those things that contributes to keeping us young at heart.
ReplyDeleteYes, we can become the "child," again. The world seems to come alive in a special way. And rightly so, we have had many years of practice. Enjoyed the wirte.
ReplyDeletenever too old to adventure!
ReplyDeleteenjoyed the poem. :)
I love this adventure away from the nursing home. You described the atmosphere and set the scene beautifully.
ReplyDeleteWe need nature now more than ever. The birds are my friends too.
ReplyDeleteReal life is lived outdoors...I love this poem
ReplyDeleteRun away and live in a tree house:)
