Foggy January day

A train's whistle muffled in the mist
as shady figures faded from my sight
so like a chicken without a head
I fumbled around with turn and twist

What sane person would walk in dense fog
like taking a stroll down a dark shady lane
or a thick forest with no trails
without the assistance of a guide dog?

No! I'm not superstitious at all
but could list more than a hundred things
playing this game has no grain of sense
Gravity; on my face I'll surely fall!

  1. The opening lines are so atmospheric - we have a small steam railway not far from here and sometimes I go for a walk along the track with a friend and her dog - I love the sound of the whistle, especially in mist and fog! The alliteration of 'muffled in the mist' is very effective, too.

  11. The first line pulls you right in. Superstitious or not, after that image, one can't help but feel jumpy.

  14. Lovely mystery here.
I can remember as a child walking to church with my family. We entered a street and were immediately met with almost no visibility fog, which mysteriously disappeared as we exited the street at the other end. Very 'Outer Limits' feel about it...

It is a tragedy to be caught in such a situation.Often it is not of choice but on account of tough luck. God forbid!
