Mixed day in town
Here in Australia winter's coming
That is because we are upside-down
I've had flu jab, didn't make me frown
Needlepoint is perfectly OK
So came out of surgery that day
Not the same sitting in dentists chair
The smile on my face soon disappears
When buzzing drill brings out all my fears
So my hands grip tight to the chairs arms
Despite young female dentists charms
Her face smiles she likes to chat a bit
Whilst I can only grunt as I am drilled
Then relax as that tooth is now filled
Stacked with filling and capped up tight
No wonder kids are afraid at night
The worst is now over despite the fear
Looks like I escape here unscathed
I am not with gory blood bathed
Worse is that I have to pay the bill
Receptionist waiting by the till
Right my teeth are looking good once more
But my bank balance took quite a hit
It helps dentist didn't hurt a bit
Perhaps I'll get present for my wife
As it's cold might get mittens, no strife

Hi Robin - yes, dentist appointments always scare me. I try to be calm but I do panic. Glad I still have an insurance, as I only pay less. Be safe in Australia.
ReplyDeleteAh yes, I had the flu jab recently too. As you say, no great problem, and the medical centre had things set up for maximum safety. Since swapping my few remaining chalky teeth for the artificial kind when I was 25, I have had no reason to fear dentists. (Smile.) This was an entertaining read, as always.
ReplyDeleteI am amused but also filled with dread reading this It is soon my turn for the dentist once they are open again. I also had the flue injection already before the lockdown
ReplyDeleteI have always been afraid of going to the dentist, Robin so this poem hits home! Hope you are staying safe during the lockdown 💝
ReplyDeleteRobin, when did you start writing horror, lol. I'm not a dentist person.
ReplyDeleteTouch wood. I have never had to like have any dental procedure so far! but i have taken a few friends to the dentist and it does NOT look fun at all.
ReplyDeleteEven though they give the pain killing jabs before, the drilling is sfill uneasy, i agree and the dents in the pocket as well
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday Robin. Happy you dropped by my sumie Sunday today
Much💜love
I enjoyed this.
ReplyDeleteI love this little slice of life. There is so much poetry in the everyday.
ReplyDeleteThe closing made me think of Serendipity. <3
Don't you just hate it when the dentist or the assistant is chatty, and asks you questions you can't possibly answer because your mouth is full?
ReplyDeleteI know, right? I'm always baffled--and wondering if they would stop if I kick them--when the dentist talks to you while you have a mouth full of drill. Makes no sense.
DeleteRobin, the best one can ask for when visiting the dentist is to go home without feeling like their head is going to explode. So, I guess the speaker had a good as it could get day.
ReplyDeleteThe dentist offices have been closed here for some time, so you are lucky to have been able to get your tooth fixed … however painful it may have been. (My dentist always asked me questions when I could not answer. Drove me nuts!)
ReplyDeleteOur Dentist office is resuming service this week, they have been shut all of April, part of March. I had a cleaning appt and was called as they cancelled. Before this spring I had two teeth pulled and a removable bridge made for me. I don't like it and have not worn it, it is in the bottom and doesn't show when I smile. My sister had her teeth pulled when she was in early 30's and is now on the third pair of falsies.
ReplyDeleteOur Dentist makes crowns in the office using a 3D printer. Technology. I can't have implants because of my brittle bones. I've had two break for no known reason.
Woe is us getting older. Oh yes, our Houston area is over 12,000 Carmona Virus 19 cases, more than many of the States.
..
You're so right, dentists tend to chat knowing fully well the ones in the chair can say nothing! :)
ReplyDeleteMy annual check-up at the dentist was cancelled due to the corona virus, which was both relief and worry. Your poem captured the panic when the dentist tells me I need work done, especially the lines:
ReplyDelete‘…buzzing drill brings out all my fears
So my hands grip tight to the chairs arms’
and the relief, touch of embarrassment, and renewed panic at the dent in the bank balance.
this was so dear and familiar. i liked its simpleness and sincerity. great write!
ReplyDelete-Hamokine Poet
I like the connection between the flu jab and needlepoint!
ReplyDeleteI have mixed thoughts for dentists and thank you for sharing your thoughts. I have to agree that it makes the wallet a little lighter after each visit.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
I hate dental work and its big price. I've spent a fortune on teeth.
