What is truth?
Oh to be a small child again
Not to understand the truth
Just to see the future bright
Imagine the tooth fairy
Gift of money for lost tooth
Then working out right from wrong
Telling fibs was not that bad
Until you stole Jimmy's toy
"Cos you wanted one like that
Got told off, that made you sad
Since then you have grown right up
Now see lies in life abound
Truth is missing from so much
Labels, leaders, lovers too
As this sad life goes around

The second verse happened to Old Egg when he was five or six!
Oh the innocence of childhood!
ReplyDeletelabels, leaders, lovers... so true!!!
ReplyDeleteAh..the loss of innocence. These are the harsh realities we face daily..always trying to discern truth from lies. Good job!
ReplyDeleteYou capture this phenomenon so well! Innocence is gone. Wisdom has rewards--if we gain it. But I am wistful just the same.
ReplyDeleteSo true.
ReplyDeleteAnd when we realize all this a bit late on a later date,
Unfortunately lies are already a part of our woeful fate...
Ultimately Truth Is Truth - Anita
I think that I have never seen a time when dishonesty was so blatant. I can hardly believe what I see on the news. I so relate to your poem, Robin. Truth was taught to us so clearly back then.
ReplyDeleteTruth was truth back then; and fibs were fibs and not lies. There is no such thing as innocence any more amidst all these lies. I am appalled at the change.
ReplyDeleteinnocence lost...the longing for that simplicity is so evident here!
ReplyDeleteTruth be told; innocence holds a redeeming grace

That is life unfortunately and that's the truth! Very true Robin!

I love the wonderful innocence of childhood - it is sad when it is lost.
ReplyDeleteApart from politicians etc - sometimes I think (white) lies are a kindness.

Although it was less complicated as a child, we should have been able to save those morals. I am sad that so many did not.
ReplyDeleteThe sad part is how this world is adjusting to the loss of innocence. sigh. Nicely expressed.
ReplyDeletePeople keep telling me it was a simpler time. I think maybe I was just more naive.
