The coming gale
There was a grey mist over the waves
The sea slowly awoke from her sleep
I thought I heard a mermaid laughing
She sang a song from the briny deep
The tide kicked the spume over the beach
With squabbling Herring Gull's normal affray
A vagrant Albatross now soared aloft
Glanced down on us then was on her way
The mermaid waved shaking her long hair
Then dived in the sea with a flip of her tail
I wish she'd stay for a yarn or two
But she'd warned me of a coming gale
I hauled my boat above high tide mark
And wondered whether I'd see her again
My sleep is oft filled with dreams of her
I listen for her sweet song, but in vain

But what a sweet song she sings
ReplyDeleteI like the story you've told here, sirens song indeed
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely poetic tale
ReplyDeleteRobin, even your storms have romantic interludes with mermaids!!! :)
ReplyDeleteGotta love a good mermaid story. Well told!
ReplyDeleteYou wanna watch out for those mermaids. Stay in your boat I say ;)
ReplyDeleteWow, I loved this poem, superb. Thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteDeep secrets of sea, which sometimes are hard to find.
ReplyDeleteDon't you just hate it when the sweetest of songs is never heard again? So frustrating!
ReplyDeleteAh, there is something so magical about the mermaid imagery. I hope she is seen again!
ReplyDeleteOh this is absolutely lovely! I do love mermaids!❤️
ReplyDeleteI wish she'd stay for a yarn or two
ReplyDeleteBut she'd warned me of a coming gale
It is good that it had the presence of mind to be helpful
Hank
men have been lured to the rocks with such songs - I like the sounds of "the tide kicked the spume over the beach
ReplyDeleteWith squabbling Herring Gull's normal affray"
There is something untouchable of the mermaid imagery... I wonder if she feels the same below.
ReplyDeleteI like the mermaid's laughter and song. Hope she got away before the gale.
ReplyDeleteThose mermaids are ever elusive. Great poetic tribute to her!
ReplyDeleteShe will sing again. She must!
ReplyDeleteI loved this tale of the mermaid....quite a gale kicking up here right now.
ReplyDeleteI hope you see your mermaid again and that next time, you two can have a nice time exchanging tales.
ReplyDeleteAh, the mer-people are so enchanting! Lovely poem; I enjoyed the description of the natural world with the storm coming, too.
ReplyDeleteI think that's what they do best leave the wonderer yearning
ReplyDeleteThis is so lovely
Happy Sunday
much love...
Ah.. But that it happened at all. Delightful dream.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, a masterful job with the rhyme in this hypnotically - and hauntingly - drawn, scene.
ReplyDeleteThe siren song and warning of a mermaid. It carried me along on a current just as it would her.
ReplyDeleteSo she saved your life but condemned you to a lifetime of yearning? No wonder mermaids have a rep.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of her singing being a warning of danger, rather than dangerous itself.
ReplyDeleteLovely...loved the tale...!!
ReplyDeletelovely poetry..
ReplyDeleteSounds like a song, very nice dream...
