Scent Lingers

Look in the mirror
There’s nobody to check now
You, me or each other

How can I beat this?
You relied on me each day
But now you have gone

It is the pressure
And the sadness of parting
Unbearable loss

We met in the spring
Wed in that glorious summer
But loss does not end

You still have substance
And you still call out to me
Your scent lingers on

  2. This must be very hard to bear.
I don't think one ever overcomes the death of a beloved spouse.

  4. A wise man once told me that the only way not to lose your loved ones is to not have any loved ones or to go first.

Life gives no happy options at the end, but it does give us happy memories to treasure.

  5. Powerful, sad. Like the ending, I hae written several about scent triggering memory, more so than the others senses

  11. Such loss.. irreplaceable..and rightly still present in your life..maybe words are another way of calling people and things back into being..giving them a different kind of substance? Jae

  12. I cannot decide if the speaker has lost his/her love to death or separation, but either way this poem is powerful and thought-provoking. Something about us lives on after we're gone. Enjoyed this very much!

  14. Scent is such a powerful connector to memories. And your words held great depth. I can imagine that will be a scent that WILL linger on. Well chosen words to go alone with the senses!

  16. I think sometimes you pull the words out of my heart. In the closet, where his suits still hang, yes - his scent still lingers.

    Thank you.

  20. a haunting love poem to one who is gone. Reminds me of a line I saw on a gravestone - not lost. But gone before. *sigh*
